Sri Lanka welcomes the ceasefire agreement reached in Gaza

Issuing a statement yesterday (20th), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement concerning the conflict in Gaza.
The statement noted that Sri Lanka is hopeful that the ceasefire arrangement, which calls for the exchange of hostages and detainees, the return of internally displaced persons to their places of residence in Gaza, and the provision of humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza, will be sustained.
The statement also noted that Sri Lanka is optimistic that these developments will contribute to establishing sustainable peace in Palestine and the surrounding region.
The North and East to India and the Southern Province to China – FSPThinakkural The Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) released a statement commenting on President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s recent visit to China. The statement highlighted that the agreements signed recently by Sri Lanka indicate that the country’s North and East are under Indian domination and the Southern Province, including Hambantota, are under Chinese authority. Commenting on the China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) refinery project, the FSP noted that in addition to Sri Lanka losing revenue, it poses risks to Sri Lanka’s energy sovereignty and national security. |
Local Government Elections to be held before the April New Year if the bill is passedThinakaran Chairperson of the Election Commission (EC) R.M.A.L. Rathnayake stated that if the Local Government Elections (Special Provisions) Bill is approved by parliament, the EC will be able to conduct the Local Government Elections before the April New Year. Rathnayake also noted that conducting the elections for 340 local government bodies (Municipal Councils, Urban Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas) will require a budget of Rs. 8 billion to Rs. 10 billion. |

Railway E-ticket scam to be investigated

The Computer Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali, yesterday (20th), that it has initiated an investigation into a scam in which individuals buy online train tickets from the Sri Lanka Railway Department and sell them to people at higher prices.
The investigating officers informed the Court that this investigation was initiated based on a complaint made by the General Manager of Railways to the Computer Crime Investigation Division of the CID.
The bunds of Gal Oya river have been breached
Lankadeepa, Divaina, Ada, Mawbima, Dinamina, Aruna The bunds of Gal Oya river have been breached in the Ampara area due to heavy rains. It is reported that around 1,000 acres of paddy fields belonging to the Deegavapiya area have been submerged due to the flood situation that resulted from the breach of river bunds. The crops in many of these paddy fields were close to being harvested, before they were destroyed due to the flood situation. |
Cases to be filed against several big shots in the coming 10 days
Mawbima Mawbima reports that cases will be filed against several top shots for financial irregularities and bribery and corruption within the coming 10 days before the end of the month. Sources claim that the government is in the process of making arrangements for the cases to be filed. The source added that the Attorney General’s Department and the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) are already preparing the files necessary for the cases. |
A harthal to break out in the North if political prisoners are not released before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year – Northern political parties
Mawbima
Political parties and civil society organisations in the North have demanded the government release the Tamil prisoners who have been imprisoned under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) before the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
Currently, a public petition demanding that these political prisoners be freed is being signed across the Northern and Eastern provinces as well.
Tamil political parties state that a harthal will break out in the North if these prisoners are not released before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

Manusha summoned to the CID today over the E8 Visa issue

Former Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara was summoned to court to provide another statement regarding the E8 Visa agreement to facilitate job opportunities for Sri Lankans in South Korea.
Nanayakkara’s attorney, Saliya Pieris, PC informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali yesterday (20th) that his client has agreed to provide a statement to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today (21st) regarding the matter.
This was noted during the hearing of the anticipatory bail application filed by former Minister Nanayakkara with the Colombo Magistrate’s Court to prevent his arrest on the above matter.

Speaking on the same matter, MP Namal Rajapaksa stated that his father is prepared to vacate the premises in question if he is requested to do so in writing.
