“An attempt to divide and annihilate the Tamils” – Acting Chairperson Sivagnanam

Acting Leader of the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) and former Northern Provincial Council Chairperson C.V.K. Sivagnanam stated that various conspiracies are being hatched against the ITAK, and that some people are working with the aim of somehow dividing and destroying the party. However, he said, they are moving forward beyond them. He stated this at a media briefing held at his office in Jaffna yesterday (13th). Even though there is talk of forming a new Tamil Arasu Kadchi, in fact there is no one within the party who even has such thoughts he added.

According to Thinakkural, C.V.K. Sivagnanam stated that some media channels are attempting to divide and discredit the ITAK, but their party has been the only one in the past 75 years of history that has had members of parliament who are free from corruption and who have not tired of the party for any reason.

Indrananda de Silva, a member of the Frontline Socialist Party and the former official photographer of the Military Police Division, has stated that the most brutal torture was taking place in the Batalanda torture chambers and that he has seen many people who had been tortured. His job was to take photographs of those who were to be killed the next day. It is mentioned that he made this statement while participating in Hiru TV’s ‘Hard Talk’ programme. He further stated that he was assigned the task of taking photographs of the three on the first day and that he was invited there by the chief in civilian clothes. He also mentioned that when he went there on the first day he saw that Ranil Wickremesinghe was talking to the chief in a room there.

Leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Rauff Hakeem has demanded that steps should be taken to handover the lands in Tamil areas that have been expropriated by the Port Authority to the people. Rauff Hakeem stated in parliament that the lands in Karumalai Utru, Nachchikkuda, Chinnamullachenai and Muthunagar that have been expropriated by the Port Authority in Trincomalee should be released to the people.

Government plot to sell our marine resources to China – Northern Province Fishermen’s Federation alleges

Northern Province Fishermen’s Federation representative N. Warnakulasingham alleged that the National People’s Power government is trying to sell our marine resources to China and other countries by ignoring them. He made this allegation at a media briefing held at the Vadamaradchi Media House in Jaffna on Thursday. He further stated that during the previous government the then minister called the members of the Fishermen’s Association and distributed copies of the new draft law though the middle part of the copy was not printed and distributed, but the fishermen objected at that time, and now the new government is trying to implement the new law.

“The government understands issues faced by professionals” – President tells university lecturers

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that the government has a very good understanding of the issues faced by professionals and is committed to protecting everyone’s rights by acting sensitively towards the issue. The meeting was held yesterday (13th) morning at the Presidential Secretariat. The president was briefed on the problems currently faced by university lecturers, and possible solutions to them were also discussed. During the discussions it was noted that the government has had to act in accordance with the recommendations and parameters of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme since Sri Lanka is currently under the programme. It was noted further that, accordingly, this year’s budget proposals have been prepared by identifying priorities within expenditure limits.

Former UNP Kalutara District MP Lakshman Wijemanne joined the SJB yesterday (13th), aligning himself with Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa. Wijemanne makes the decision to join the SJB following a public protest against Leader of the UNP Ranil Wickremesinghe at a party event held at Sirikotha on Wednesday (12th). During the event, Wijemanne objected to the appointment of Dr. Rajitha Senaratne as the UNP organiser of the Kalutara District and had been reportedly dismissed by Wickremesinghe. Following the incident, Wijemanne announced his departure from the UNP, stating that he could no longer support its leadership decisions.

The government is preparing to pay the increased salaries and salary increments to government employees from this year’s budget from April, and to pay them on April 10, before the normal date for the payment of monthly salaries in observance of the Sinhala Hindu New Year that month. Accordingly, the government has taken steps to issue the circular regarding the increased salaries and incentives a week after the relevant budget for the year 2025 is passed on March 21.

Cabinet approval has been granted to employ 15,341 individuals in the government service, stating that the recommendations of the committee to manage staff and review the process of recruiting individuals for the government service are being implemented. These recruitments have been done during the past several weeks. Accordingly, Cabinet approval has been granted to recruit these individuals to the government service at three cabinet meetings held on February 9, February 19 and March 10.

Former superintendent of the Boossa Prison shot and killed in Akmeemana

A former assistant superintendent of the Boossa High Security Prison in Galle was shot and killed in the Thalagaha area of Akmeemana yesterday (13th). The police state that two men on a motorcycle opened fire at the victim while he was gardening in his yard using a 9 mm pistol. Investigations are currently underway to apprehend the suspects responsible for the shooting. The 61–year-old former assistant superintendent had reportedly retired three years ago, and had received threats from underworld drug kingpin ‘Podi Lassi’. However, the reason behind the shooting has not yet been uncovered.

Police have arrested the suspect in connection with the sexual assault on a female doctor at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital in Galnewa. The suspect had been arrested while hiding in a jungle in Galnewa. Additionally, the sister of the suspect was also taken into custody for sheltering the suspect. The police arrested the 37-year-old woman from Galnewa. The suspect had reportedly stayed at his sister’s house the night following the incident. However, when questioned by police the next day about his whereabouts the woman reportedly failed to provide any details.
