“Great impact in the North and East due to microcredit schemes” – MP Gajendrakumar states

ACTC MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam stated that new legislative amendments must be introduced to provide relief to those affected by microcredit schemes in the North and East.
Speaking during the parliamentary debate on the Microfinance and Credit Regulatory Authority Bill on Wednesday (4th), he noted that people in these regions were targeted by such schemes following the end of the war, leading many, including war widows, into severe debt traps and even suicide.
Although the government previously indicated that a new amendment would address the shortcomings of the 2023 Microfinance Act, the MP claimed the current bill fails to include those necessary changes.

Thinakkural NFF Leader Wimal Weerawansa alleged that the current Minister of Justice previously appeared as a lawyer for Zahran Hashim, the alleged mastermind of the Easter Sunday suicide attacks. Speaking at an event in Ratnapura, Weerawansa claimed that Minister Harshana Nanayakkara had travelled to Batticaloa to represent Hashim in court. He criticised the government for targeting intelligence officials like Major General (Retd) Suresh Sallay while appointing individuals associated with such cases to ministerial portfolios. Weerawansa further asserted that the government’s actions weaken the national security structure, neglect cultural traditions like the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, and have failed to address economic corruption involving coal, medicine, and rice imports. |

The government has allocated Rs. 10,000 million to purchase paddy from farmers while increasing the guaranteed purchasing prices. Responding to questions in parliament on Wednesday (4th), the prime minister stated that Nadu paddy will be bought at Rs. 120, Samba at Rs. 130, and Keeri Samba at Rs. 140. Storage facilities have been expanded to accommodate 50,000 t of paddy, and all government warehouses under the Paddy Marketing Board are now open to farmers. The prime minister further noted that the government is prepared to increase funding beyond the initial allocation based on the volume of paddy provided by farmers during the harvesting season. |

Thamilan SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa questioned how a distressed Iranian naval vessel entered Sri Lankan waters and urged the government to disclose its point of origin. Speaking in parliament yesterday (4th), he asked if this incident was a consequence of secret foreign agreements signed by the government in the past. While the Sri Lanka Navy rescued several individuals and admitted them to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle, Rajapaksa noted that 101 people from the vessel are reportedly missing. He further raised concerns regarding national security amidst Middle East tensions and questioned whether the Navy had received any prior intelligence regarding the vessel’s presence. |

“Chief of Defence Staff post abolished: cabinet approval to remove the Act” – Nalinda Jayatissa

Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the government holds the view that the post of Chief of Defence Staff is unnecessary in the current context.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the Department of Government Information yesterday (4th) to announce cabinet decisions, Jayatissa noted that the Ministry of Defence shares this stance regarding the position.
He further explained that during the cabinet meeting held on February 24, 2025, approval was granted to draft a bill to repeal the Chief of Defence Staff Act, No. 35 of 2009.

The judgment specified that Sub-Inspector Ramanayaka of the Mount Lavinia Police, who was responsible for the arrest, must pay Rs. 30,000 from his personal funds as compensation to the petitioner. Additionally, the court ordered the state to provide a further payment of Rs. 20,000 to Mohamed Milhan as part of the settlement. |
“Safety of Sri Lankan workers in the Middle East, guaranteed” – Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha HerathDinamina Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath stated that according to current information, approximately one million Sri Lankans are employed in the Middle Eastern region. A submarine attack on an Iranian warship, a vessel capable of launching missiles into the sky, was carried out in the seas off the coast of Southern Sri Lanka.
The United States has claimed responsibility for the strike while US Defence [War] Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the action, stating that a US Navy submarine torpedoed and sank an Iranian naval vessel.
The vessel was completely destroyed, leaving behind a large oil slick in the sea.
Of the 180 individuals reported to have been aboard, the attack has left 80 dead and 68 others missing in action.
Amidst the destruction, 32 were rescued from the distressed Iranian warship 40 nautical miles off Galle port during an operation by the Sri Lanka Navy.
On humanitarian grounds, the Sri Lanka Navy hospitalised 32 of those rescued, who have been admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital.
Following these events, security has been tightened at Karapitiya Hospital.
The Tamil press highlighted that the Spokesperson for the Sri Lanka Navy, Buddhika Sampath, stated that investigations into the matter are being carried out.
