“Five out of the seven firearms that belong to Yoshitha [Rajapaksa] are in the custody of the ministry” – Defence Secretary

Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Sampath Thuyacontha yesterday (29th) stated that two out of the seven firearms issued to Yoshitha Rajapaksa have not yet been handed over to the government. He added that Rajapaksa has been informed to return one of the two remaining firearms to the government. Thuyacontha noted that one firearm will be provided to him after obtaining an intelligence report.
Speaking at a press conference held at the ministry premises yesterday (29th), Thuyacontha further added that 1,368 out of 1,697 firearms issued by the Defence Ministry for personal security of individuals have been returned, while 182 persons have failed to return their firearms to the government. The defence secretary informed that a survey has found that some individuals have been issued more than one firearm by the government, and a decision has been taken to issue only one firearm to a person based on the intelligence report on the threat to their life.
AArrested MP Archchuna granted bail
Lankadeepa, Divaina, Ada, Mawbima, Dinamina Jaffna District independent MP Ramanathan Archchuna was arrested by a special team of police officers in Jaffna yesterday (29th) for allegedly obstructing the duties of police personnel in Anuradhapura. He was later produced in the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court and granted bail. |

Lankadeepa, Divaina, Mawbima Speaking at the Sri Lanka Economic Summit, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that the upcoming budget is expected to allocate Rs. 1.35 trillion as government capital expenditure, making this the highest amount spent on capital expenditure by a government in recent times. The president added that some government institutions with massive expenses will have to close down, and that the government will attempt to sell certain government institutions on the stock market. Dissanayake added further that an investment project requires approvals from a total of eight institutions which currently takes around 184 weeks, and that the government aims to reduce this to 102 days. |
