“I will expel you from the House” – Deputy speaker warns Archchuna

Deputy Speaker Mohammed Rizvi Sally sternly warned Jaffna District independent group MP Ramanathan Archchuna, who continued to behave in an unruly manner despite his announcement, that he will be removed from the House by the security. The deputy speaker issued this warning after MP Archchuna behaved in an unruly manner during the controversy that erupted in parliament yesterday (6th) when Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa made a statement that insulted the podium while addressing the prime minister.

Cabinet Spokesperson Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the government was unaware of any plans to arrest former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa in connection with the Easter Sunday attacks. Jayatissa made this statement in response to questions raised by journalists about a claim made by former MP Udaya Gammanpila, who accused the government of planning to arrest Rajapaksa in relation to the Easter Sunday attacks. Jayatissa further stated that the institutions investigating the Easter Sunday attacks are responsible for informing the public about those they intend to arrest.

“Jeevan has no right to talk about plantation workers” – MP Ramalingam Chandrasekar argues

Minister of Fisheries Ramalingam Chandrasekar told parliament that Jeevan Thondaman has no right to speak about the problems of plantation workers. He also stated that the plantation workers have rejected and abandoned Jeevan Thondaman, and that they will not trust him anymore. The minister made this remark in response to a statement raised by Ceylon Workers’ Congress General Secretary Jeevan Thondaman during the debate on the regulations under the Intellectual Property Act during the parliamentary session yesterday (6th).

 

“There is no ban on the import of Islamic religious books” – Deputy Minister Aruna Jayasekara informs the House

Deputy Minister of Defence Aruna Jayasekara stated in parliament that the government has not imposed any ban on the import of Islamic religious books into the country. He also stated that all religious books are subject to regulatory action only as recommended by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry for national security reasons. He mentioned this while responding to a question raised by opposition member of parliament Nizam Kariapper during the oral question hour of the parliamentary session yesterday (6th).

Fire breaks out at the Krrish building in Colombo

Mawbima, Dinamina, Aruna

Papers report that a fire broke out in the ‘controversial’ 60-storey Krrish building located in Colombo Fort yesterday (6th). The Fire Brigade states that the fire was caused on the 35th floor of the building and had spread to four other floors. The Fire Brigade dispatched four fire trucks to douse the flames.

While Mawbima reports that the fire occurred on the 30th floor of the building, Aruna reports that it occurred on the 35th floor. No casualties were reported.

Warrant for Diana recalled

Divaina, Dinamina

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has recalled an arrest warrant for former state minister Diana Gamage over her failure to appear in court for proceedings related to immigration law violations. Colombo chief magistrate had issued the warrant earlier yesterday (6th). Gamage later appeared in court after submitting a motion, leading to the recall of the arrest warrant. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has filed seven charge sheets against the former state minister including allegations of staying in Sri Lanka without a valid visa and providing false statements to immigration authorities.

Onmax DT director caught at Katunayake

Divaina, Aruna

Colombo Chief Magistrate Tanuja Lakmali yesterday (6th) ordered that a director of Onmax DT linked to a large-scale pyramid scheme which has been accused of accepting deposits of more than Rs. 300 million be remanded until February 20. The individual was arrested yesterday (6th) after returning to Sri Lanka from Dubai. The chief magistrate ordered that the suspect, who worked as a second level director of the pyramid scheme, be held in remand custody.

Government prepares to regulate private universities

Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya yesterday (6th) stated in parliament that the government will take steps to regulate private universities in the future. The prime minister stated that a national policy will be prepared and private universities will be regulated, and that a report for the preparation of the relevant national policy has been requested from the committee established in the Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education.

Chief Government Whip Nalinda Jayatissa yesterday (6th) released a list of names of 43 former MPs who have obtained compensation for a total of Rs. 1.22 billion for the property damage caused during the aragalaya period. Jayatissa alleged that these MPs have claimed massive compensations by influencing government officials to overestimate damage caused to their houses. The papers highlight several former ministers and MPs that had received compensation for property damage as follows: Former MP Nimal Lanza Rs. 69.2 million, former minister Ali Sabri Raheem Rs. 70.9 million, former MP Gamini Lokuge Rs. 74.9 million, former MP Johnston Fernando Rs. 93.4 million and former minister Keheliya Rambukwella Rs. 95.9 million. Chief Government Whip Nalinda Jayatissa also stated that the maximum amount to be given as compensation even in the case of a natural disaster was Rs. 2.5 million.

Daughter of slain journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge, Ahimsa Wickrematunge, has called for the impeachment of Sri Lanka’s Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe over alleged “gross abuse of power and neglect of duty” in connection with the criminal proceedings on her father’s assassination. Writing to Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Ahimsa Wickrematunge expressed concerns over the attorney general’s recommendation to discharge three individuals who had been named as suspects in the case filed at the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court over the inquiry into the former Sunday Leader editor Lasantha Wickrematunge’s murder.

Lankadeepa, Divaina, Mawbima, Dinamina, Anidda, Virakesari and Thamilan report that amidst the controversy, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had called AG Parinda Ranasinghe to the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (6th) to obtain further information regarding the AG’s recommendation. The meeting had been about two hours long, and was attended by Minister of Justice and National Integration Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara.

Additionally, Lankadeepa, Divaina, Ada, Mawbima, Dinamina, Virakesari and Thamilan have reported that the Young Journalists’ Association held a silent protest yesterday (6th) near the Attorney General’s Department in protest against his recommendation.
