Minister of Health and Mass Media and Chief Government Whip Nalinda Jayatissa claimed that the 13th Amendment to the Constitution will be implemented until a new constitution is brought in. He added that the constitution will be drafted when the opportunity comes, and that sufficient time will be given to obtain public opinion on it after it is debated in parliament. Addressing parliament yesterday (24th), he noted that however, the economy should be strengthened prior to that.

The CIABOC ordered to handover copies of [the documents pertaining to] Keheliya’s illegal assets to his family

The Colombo High Court yesterday (24th) ordered the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) to hand over certified copies of the documents pertaining to the assets of former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and his family members, which had been suspended on the orders of the Court. Previously, as part of the ongoing investigation by the CIABOC, the court had issued an order suspending the fixed deposits and life insurance policies valued at over Rs. 97 million belonging to Rambukwella, his spouse, daughters and relatives. The court issued the order considering the plea made by the defence counsel yesterday (24th).
7,194 people affected by the dry weather
Lankadeepa, Ada 7,194 people belonging to 2,278 families in the Ratnapura and Kalutara Districts have been seriously affected by the drought and extreme dry weather prevailing in the country. Accordingly, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) stated that 7,194 people do not have access to drinking water. The DMC further stated that they have taken steps to provide water for the people in the aforementioned districts. |

Dinamina The 58th session of the UNHRC commenced yesterday (24th) in Geneva. The session will continue until April 4, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it will focus on the human rights situation of member countries and the measures taken for its promotion. A delegation including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath will represent Sri Lanka at the session. The ministry pointed out that the minister and the delegation will also hold discussions with diplomats of other countries during the conference. |

Education Secretary of the FSP Pubudu Jayagoda stated that according to this year’s budget, one family will have to pay taxes to the government amounting to Rs. 40,000 per month. Speaking at a press conference held at the FSP office in Nugegoda yesterday (24th), Jayagoda added that it is an increase of Rs. 8,200 compared to the amount that had to be paid as monthly tax last year (2024).

Attorney-at-law Priyankara Pushpakumara provided a witness account of the shooting of underworld figure Ganemulle Sanjeewa yesterday (24th) before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court. In his witness account, Pushpakumara stated that a man who entered the courtroom while covering his face with a file, shot Ganemulle Sanjeewa, carefully left the gun on the floor, opened the door of the courtroom and left. He also added that the people in the courtroom rushed out shouting that a lawyer was firing shots. Divaina highlighted a statement from a constable of the Keselwatta Police stating that the suspect was shot just as the magistrate questioned as to why he was brought to the open court without an order.
Ada highlighted that the shooter had been convinced to carry out the shooting via Facebook. Reports also state that the woman who had handed the gun over to the shooter was still at large. Further evidence was revealed during the investigation that only cases that were scheduled over Zoom were to be conducted that day and that the suspect was even seated outside of the courtroom.
Permission has also been granted to retain and question the shooter and the driver for three months.

Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Sampath Thuyacontha stated that he has issued an order for the immediate arrest of all deserters from the security forces. The defence secretary highlighted the ministry’s concern over the recent shootings and added that accordingly, a decision was made to arrest all security force deserters. Thuyacontha added that the underlying problem there is a social issue. He clarified that they have confirmed through investigations that military officers who have deserted the military before completing their full-service period have a high probability of getting involved with the underworld.
