Former Provincial Councillor Sanjay Sirivardhana was arrested following the discovery of a cache of firearms and ammunition buried on his property. The police reported finding a T-56 assault rifle, two magazines, 130 rounds of ammunition, a 12-bore shotgun and six rounds of shotgun ammunition on Sirivardhana’s 25-acre coconut estate in Attanagalla. The search operation was conducted based on a tip-off received by the authorities. Further investigations revealed that additional hidden firearms, including four more T-56 rifles and several live hand grenades, are likely to be buried on the property, and investigations are underway.

Kobawaka Dhamminda Thera left the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (11th) after recording a statement that lasted for around seven hours. On Monday (10th), Basnayake Nilame of the Ruhunu Kataragama Devalaya Dishan Gunasekara recorded a statement at the CID for nearly three hours about a house built by Ven. Soratha Thera of Kiri Vehera inside the Kiri Vehera premises during the tenure of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Training program launched to educate police officers on the LGBTQ+ community

A new training program aimed at educating police officers about the LGBTQ+ community has been launched at the Katana National Police Training Institute with the support of the Embassy of the Netherlands. The initiative seeks to enhance awareness among law enforcement officers about the rights and protections afforded to LGBTQ+ individuals under Sri Lankan law. Police officers are expected to intervene appropriately in any challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, whether at police stations or within society. The inaugural session of the training program took place on Monday (10th) under the patronage of Ambassador of the Netherlands Ms. Bonnie Horbach, and in the presence of Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasooriya. A team of 24 advisory officers has been selected as the first batch of trainees under this program, which aims to enhance police understanding of LGBTQ+ issues. The five-day training will be conducted by advisors from Equite, an organisation actively involved in this initiative.

Supreme Court summons former President Sirisena over unpaid compensation in the Royal Park murder case | Lawyer informs SC: Sirisena has paid Rs. 1 million compensation as ordered

The Supreme Court (SC) has issued a notice to former President Maithripala Sirisena requiring him to appear in court on April 29. This notice pertains to the non-payment of a compensation order related to the Royal Park murder case. The court’s directive follows the annulment of the presidential pardon granted to Jude Shramantha Jayamaha who was sentenced to death for the murder of Yvonne Johnson in 2005. The Supreme Court’s decision came after a petition filed by the Women and Media Collective was examined on June 6 of last year. The bench, which delivered the verdict, determined that the presidential pardon violated fundamental human rights. Consequently, Sirisena was ordered to pay the compensation as a remedy for this violation.

Former President Maithripala Sirisena, through his lawyer, informed the SC yesterday that he has paid the required compensation to the aggrieved in the Royal Park murder case. Following that the SC directed the president’s counsel to formally present these facts by filing a motion.

The doctors of the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital launched an indefinite strike against the sexual assault of a lady doctor at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has decided to launch an island-wide 24-hour token strike as well today in protest over the incident. The GMOA had previously called on the government to take immediate steps to apprehend the suspect responsible before 8.00 am today (12th) and warned of trade union action if authorities failed to do so. Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala stated that the suspect has been found to be an army deserter and that five police teams have been deployed to investigate and arrest the suspect. In the meantime, the Ministry of Health and Mass Media urged all concerned parties to remain calm and offer the necessary cooperation to the authorities conducting the investigation.
