“Provincial council elections will not be held this year; it is also necessary to focus on development” – Nalinda Jayatissa

Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa claimed that the provincial council elections will not be held this year, noting that the government has already conducted three elections within six months, including the upcoming local government polls. He added that laws need to be amended regarding the provincial election.

Democratic Tamil National Alliance (DTNA) MP Amirthanathan (Selvam) Adaikkalanathan has requested the government to carry out investigations into the massacres that took place at the Welikada Prison in 1983. He added that the Batalanda report has been brought to parliament and that they welcome that move. He further added that at the same time investigations are also necessary regarding the Tamil prisoners who were killed during the riots in the Welikada Prison in 1983 by bringing gangsters from outside the Welikada Prison during the J.R. Jayewardene regime.

Acting General Secretary of the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) M.A. Sumanthiran questioned as to how the nominations filed by the government side were not rejected in the North and East. He added that if the shortcomings in the nomination papers related to the local government elections are being scrutinised, then there are also shortcomings in the nomination papers submitted by the National People’s Power in the North and East, and that he will take steps to file a case in this regard as well.

“No need to discuss the 13th [Amendment] with India” – SLPP

General Secretary of the SLPP Sagara Kariyawasam stated that it is unnecessary to discuss the 13th Amendment to the Constitution with India. He added that unnecessary conflicts will arise if police and land powers are given to the provincial councils. He further added that they are paying close attention to the agreements that are going to be signed between India and the Sri Lankan government.

The President’s Fund to provide aid for the education of children of families that have been affected by wild elephant attacks

The President’s Fund has decided to provide financial aid to support the uninterrupted education of children from families affected by elephant attacks. The board of trustees of the President’s Fund had met under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, and reached the decision. Accordingly, priority will be given to families who have lost a member or have someone injured due to elephant attacks. Families that have suffered property and crop damage due to these incidents can also apply for this assistance.

“If the Opposition doesn’t unite, the government cannot be defeated” – Navin Dissanayake

Deputy Chair of the UNP Navin Dissanayake stated that the government cannot be defeated unless the Opposition, which is divided into four or five groups, unites. He added that the goal of the UNP in this election is to secure 20% more votes than the number of votes it secured in the last general election. Dissanayake made these statements while talking to the media.

The Excise Department of Sri Lanka announced that the inclusion of the date of manufacture on all hard and soft liquor bottles and cans that are manufactured in Sri Lanka will be made compulsory from today (1st) onward. Accordingly, all liquor manufacturers have been directed to print the date of manufacture below the bottle cap and above the label of the bottle.

Former Army Commander Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka stated that he is confident that the people, who have been battered by the politics of promises, will give power of the villages to the existing government at this year ’s pradeshiya sabha elections. He made this statement at a public meeting held at the Indra Hotel, Kadawatha on March 30.

Election activities of several LG bodies including CMC suspended for a day: orders issued to returning officers; 30 nomination related petitions

The Court of Appeal yesterday (1st) ordered returning officers to suspend activities related to conducting Local Government (LG) elections in areas where petitions have been filed challenging the rejection of nomination papers. Accordingly, the suspension will remain in effect until April 2 (today). The judge bench issued the order after considering multiple petitions filed by political parties and independent groups against the rejection of nomination papers.
Additionally, it is reported that the Supreme Court (SC) has received 37 writ petitions challenging the rejection of nomination papers for the upcoming local government elections. The court has scheduled further examination of these petitions for April 3.

Dinamina, Thamilan and Thinakaran report that the Attorney General (AG) requested the Supreme Court (SC) to dismiss these petitions without taking them up for hearing.

Chamara Sampath and Viyalendran remanded further; bail not granted

Papers report that both MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake and former State Minister Sathasivam Viyalendran, who are in remand custody, have been further remanded. Accordingly, MP Chamara Sampath was ordered to be remanded further until April 8, 2025. The order was issued after he was produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday (1st). Dassanayake, who was taken into custody on March 27, was granted bail in two of the cases but was ordered to remain in remand custody over the third charge. The court had previously remanded him until today for further proceedings. Former State Minister Sathasivam Viyalendran, who was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), has been further remanded until April 8 by the Aluthkade Magistrate’s Court. He was arrested in connection with aiding and abetting an incident of bribery.
