“Do not disrupt [the NPP forming] administrations” – Tilvin Silva requests the Opposition

General Secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Tilvin Silva stated that if the opposition party obstructs the formation of administrations in local government bodies where the National People’s Power (NPP) has won with a majority, they will choose to obstruct the opposition party. He requested the Opposition that the people’s position not be hindered in forming the administrations in those bodies. He further stated that the NPP has won the most victories in the local government elections, and that of the 267 councils it has won, it can form the administrations in 120 councils without any problem.

Three youths that went bathing in the [Wennappuwa] sea missing; youth who was rescued dies at the hospital
Lankadeepa, Ada, Dinamina, Aruna
Three youths were reported missing while bathing in the sea off Wennappuwa yesterday (13th). One person who was rescued was reported dead by drowning after admission to hospital. Police stated that the four youths were from Nuwara Eliya. The police added that search operations are currently underway to locate the missing persons.

The fatal Gerandi Ella road accident: The police committee commences investigations

A special police investigative committee was appointed to probe into the tragic bus accident which claimed the lives of 22 individuals in Gerandi Ella, Ramboda on Sunday (11th). The committee which was appointed on a directive of the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) consists of five members and is headed by Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) Ajith Rohana. The acting IGP has also emphasised that a report containing the committee’s observations regarding the accident and recommendations to ensure that such accidents do not occur again must be submitted to him without fail before May 30. The Police Headquarters states that investigations are being conducted into the running condition of the bus involved in the accident, the driver’s experience and his physical and mental condition on that day, the condition of the road at the scene of the accident and the weather conditions in the area at the time of the accident. Additionally, a final report is to be prepared and submitted to the acting IGP after obtaining a report on the defects in the relevant bus and the post-mortem report on the driver.

Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akio Isomata states that Japanese companies have faced numerous problems due to attempts by certain parties in the country to involve Japanese companies in various malpractices when securing investments in Sri Lanka. He pointed out that Japanese companies never engage in fraudulent activities such as bribery or commission payments when dealing with another party, and added that Japan does not allow such activities. The ambassador further pointed out that the Japanese government was under severe pressure due to corruption, fraud and irregularities occurring in Sri Lanka. He expressed confidence that the current Sri Lankan government would take appropriate steps to avoid such situations. It is also stated that allegations have been made in the past that certain Japanese companies have faced various problems in securing investments in Sri Lanka.
