Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation K.D. Lal Kantha claimed that the government has no intention to acquire the people’s lands in the North and East, adding that the intention was to resolve the land related issues in the regions. Responding to ITAK MP S. Shritharan’s question on the gazette notification on land acquisition in the North and East, Lal Kantha further added that the efforts to resolve the existing land issues will be delayed if the gazette notification is withdrawn. He noted that there will be a discussion in parliament on May 23 on the issue, which will be headed by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya.

He added that the responsibility of the government is to prevent such situations in the future. He further clarified that the Government of Sri Lanka had intervened and objected through the Sri Lankan High Commission and Consular Division in Canada when it was initiated to establish the memorial. |

Addressing parliament yesterday (20th), independent group MP Archchuna Ramanathan praised the soldiers who won the war and created an environment where everyone can live in peace. Praising the humaneness of the soldiers, he added that he respected the Sinhala soldiers as they had taken Brigadier Balraj to Singapore for a heart surgery and brought him back. Commenting on the Tamil Genocide Memorial in Canada, he noted that the reason is to show that genocide has occurred, and not to divide this country into two.

Case filed against former Minister Chandrani by the CIABOC

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has initiated legal proceedings against former Minister of Women and Child Affairs and Dry Zone Development Chandrani Bandara. The case includes allegations that she appointed close associates to positions within her ministry bypassing established recruitment procedures during the yahapalana government. Accordingly, Bandara has been charged with committing offences punishable under the Bribery Act while serving as the minister of the relevant ministry between January 14, 2019 and January 31, 2019.

Divaina, Ada, Dinamina Former Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha member Milroy Perera, who was being sought by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the alleged preparation of forged documents related to a government owned plot of land in the Kiribathgoda town, was remanded until May 26 following his surrender to court yesterday (20th). The suspect, who had been in hiding for over two months, surrendered to court through his lawyer, at which point the magistrate issued the remand order. |
A committee appointed by the president to look into corruption in SriLankan Airlines
Dinamina President Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday (20th) instructed the relevant authorities to appoint a committee led by the Presidential Secretariat to investigate the allegations of corruption and irregularities within SriLankan Airlines. During a discussion held yesterday (20th) at the Presidential Secretariat with the Board of Directors of SriLankan Airlines and representatives of all affiliated trade unions, the president emphasised that SriLankan Airlines could not have been established without collective intervention. He further noted that, given the current situation where the airline will no longer receive funding from the Treasury for operational expenses, it is essential to enhance the internal capacity of the institution to sustain and rebuild itself. |

Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala revealed in parliament yesterday (20th) that the State Intelligence Service (SIS) has discovered links between key Sri Lankan political parties and 10 organised criminal gangs. Minister Wijepala added that the SIS reports links between politicians from parties such as the SLPP, SJB and UNP and organised criminal gangs. He stressed that former ministers and deputy ministers, MPs and current and former local council politicians have also been found to have links with organised criminal gangs. The minister further stated that investigations have been launched into these links and that names of these individuals will be revealed soon.

The SLPP held a War Heroes’ Day commemoration near the War Memorial in Battaramulla yesterday (20th). Former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa were not invited for the official commemoration held recently. Mahinda Rajapaksa, attending the commemoration, stated that the war was fought to secure peace in the country, not to capture anyone. The event was also attended by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Speaking at the gathering, Mahinda Rajapaksa added that his attendance was a matter of duty. “We came here today to fulfil a duty. Yes, we fought the war for peace, not to capture or oppress anyone. We fought to save the country”, the former president stressed.
