The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (STLDA) states that suspicions are being raised that an old video relating to incidents of harassment of tourists is being re-circulated on social media to launch a damaging campaign against the tourism industry in Sri Lanka. SLTDA Chairperson Buddhika Hewawasam explained that suspicions were raised after video footage of an attack on a Filipino national on the Southern coast and an announcement prohibiting the wearing of bikinis in public places in the Pottuvil and Arugam Bay areas had been circulated on social media. However, Hewawasam confirmed that tourists are wearing bikinis without any problem on the beaches in the Arugam Bay and Pottuvil areas, and clarified that the announcement against wearing bikinis had been posted on the road and not on the beach.
