“The jewellery recovered from the war is to be returned with claims; proceed with documents to get them. Unclaimed LTTE gold to be used for Northern development” – Minister Bimal

Leader of the House Minister Bimal Rathnayake announced in parliament that gold jewellery recovered by the army in the North during the war will soon be returned to its rightful owners. Those claiming the jewellery must submit the necessary documents as proof of ownership. The jewellery, now in the Police Department’s custody following presidential instructions, is undergoing chemical analysis to verify its authenticity. Minister Rathnayake added that unclaimed or unverifiable jewellery will be placed in a public fund dedicated to the development of the Northern Province. This fund will also include a government monetary contribution. Additionally, Tamils living abroad will have the opportunity to participate in this development initiative. The announcement came during the debate on the National Transport Commission (Amendment) Bill, following a request by MP Selvam Adaikkalanathan to facilitate the return of the recovered jewellery.

Cricketer Sachithra indicted

The Hambantota High Court has indicted former Sri Lankan cricketer Sachithra Senanayake over allegations of match-fixing during the 2020 Lanka Premier League (LPL). This makes him the first cricketer charged under Sri Lanka’s anti-corruption sports law. Senanayake, who is currently out on bail, was accused of attempting to approach Colombo Kings player Tharindu Ratnayake during the inaugural edition of the LPL with the intention of influencing him to underperform. The investigation was initiated in 2020 following a complaint to the local anti-corruption officer. If found guilty, Senanayake faces upto 10 years in prison, a fine of upto Rs. 100 million or both.

He added further that Prabhakaran tried to import goods from Thailand before 2009.
