An investigation launched by the CID has revealed that, in addition to the prisoners granted presidential pardon on Vesak Poya Day, several other inmates were allegedly released unlawfully by prison authorities. According to emerging reports, the CID has received substantial information suggesting that approximately 20 inmates may have been released by misusing the presidential pardon granted for Vesak. Additionally, a senior police official stated that there is suspicion that around 30 to 35 inmates were similarly released under questionable circumstances last year. These revelations have triggered an extensive investigation, which reportedly commenced after a strong public discourse arose when a prisoner held at the Anuradhapura Prison was released under the Vesak presidential pardon. A team of CID officers has already visited Anuradhapura and initiated inquiries into the matter. Preliminary investigations have uncovered details suggesting that the presidential pardon was misused to unlawfully release certain inmates. Investigations will also be launched into whether the officers had accepted bribes in order to release the said prisoners. The newspapers further report that the commissioner general of prisons is also being questioned regarding this matter.
