The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) yesterday (11th) officially announced a 15% increase in electricity tariffs, which will come into effect from today (12th). PUCSL officials state that the revision was made following a comprehensive public consultation process, during which both written and oral feedback was considered. The commission stated further that the decision aligns with established tariff regulation procedures and also takes into account several key economic and operational factors. The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) had initially proposed an 18.3% hike in electricity rates for the period covering June to December 2025. Although the PUCSL approved a slightly lower adjustment than what was proposed, the commission emphasised that the revised tariffs are essential to ensure the sustainability of the power sector amid ongoing financial pressures.
