IMF is the reason for the electricity tariff hike; trade unions express deep dissatisfaction

Thamilan

Electricity tariffs increased by 15% from yesterday, prompting strong opposition from trade unions who blame pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The hike affects domestic users, religious sites, hotels, industries, government institutions and public utilities. General Secretary of the
Electricity Board Trade Union Prabhat Priyantha criticised the
timing, saying the tariff rise aims to make the Ceylon Electricity Board profitable for IMF funding. Sumedha Seneviratne of the People’s Progressive Service Union called the increase unjustified, especially given adequate reservoir levels. M.D.R. Athula, President of the Electricity Users’ Association, said the hike is government-driven under IMF pressure, arguing tariffs should have decreased with lower costs. Indrajith Perera, President of the Telecommunications Station Owners Association, warned that increasing printing and photocopying rates would severely affect students.
