Virakesari reports that five skeletal remains in an intertwined state, a toy, a shoe and a school bag along with a child’s skeleton were recovered at the Chemmani mass grave yesterday (1st).
Thinakkural quotes Attorney Ranitha Gnanarajah as stating that around five skeletons are closely intertwined and it is difficult to count the exact numbers at this stage. She added that there are consultative discussions going on to combine the old case and the new case on Chemmani though they are separate but connected.

Deputy Minister Susil Ranasinghe claimed that though the gazette notification regarding land title has been suspended due to the case of M.A. Sumanthiran, they will create awareness among the public in the Vavuniya District through government officials, and end the issues related to land titles. He added that there are many land issues in the North and East. On the one hand people have lost their land rights and on the other hand they are unable to use their lands, he added further. He noted that steps have been taken to return 24,000 acres of land in the Vavuniya District.

“Nationwide online traffic fine payment available now” – Bimal Rathnayake
Dinamina
Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Bimal Rathnayake stated that cabinet approval has been granted to implement the nationwide programme for paying traffic fines online under the standard projects introduced by the government. Rathnayake added that the pilot project was implemented from Anuradhapura to Kurunegala and that police officers will be provided with mobile phones for this purpose. He accordingly stressed that from this year onwards traffic fines can be paid via mobile phone from any location.
Japan donates USD 2.5 million to the anti-corruption mechanism
Dinamina TA sum of USD 2.5 million has been provided to Sri Lanka by the Japanese government to implement a three-year project aimed at strengthening the country’s anti-corruption mechanism. This project is being implemented with the intervention of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to promote transparency and accountability in public administration. The project is intended to establish a mechanism to address corrupt practices through the establishment of an anti-corruption framework. The agreement for this was signed yesterday (1st) between Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akio Isomata and UNDP Resident Representative in Sri Lanka Azusa Kubota in the presence of Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has arrested three individuals, including a former commissioner general of the Department of Motor Traffic, in connection with an incident involving the fraudulent registration and issuance of licence plates for vehicles that were not officially released by Sri Lanka Customs. Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali Jayatunga yesterday (1st) ordered that they be remanded until July 8. Accordingly, former Commissioner General of the Department of Motor Traffic at Narahenpita Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasingha has been remanded along with Brahmana Wasala Priyantha Bandara Eriyagama (retired assistant director of Information Technology) and Atharagama Gedara Dhammika Niroshan (clerk) over allegations of facilitating and entering illegal data related to the incident.

Former Controller of the Department of Immigration and Emigration Harsha Ilukpitiya, who is currently in remand custody, made an open statement before the Supreme Court (SC) yesterday (1st) admitting without conditions to the charge of contempt of court. The charge relates to the failure to implement an interim order issued regarding the electronic visa issuance service at the airport, based on instructions given at the time by then-Secretary of the Ministry Viyani Gunathilaka. He made this statement after withdrawing his previous declaration of innocence regarding the charge. The SC decided to deliver the sentence for the admitted offence on July 24.
