“Murder! Murder!! Murder!!!; so many killings each day” – Opposition Leader Sajith strongly alleges

Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa claimed that the government has no plan to curb the criminal activities in the country, adding that it does not have a long vision to maintain law and order to protect the public. Addressing the media in Anuradhapura yesterday (3rd), he stated that killings of persons are happening continuously, and groups of the underworld, drug traffickers and
organised crime engage in such criminal activities. He noted that the government is unresponsive even after questions have been raised in this regard.

“International investigation essential
for Chemmani mass grave case” – British MP Dame Siobhain

In a statement on the mass grave in Chemmani, Dame Siobhain McDonagh, British MP and chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Tamils, stated that the excavation of a mass grave in Chemmani speaks to decades of pain and silence suffered by the Tamil people. She added that so far 33 skeletons have been found in the excavation and kept under the custody of the government judicial medical officer. Siobhain noted that human rights activists have expressed concerns about the possibility of evidence-tampering and destruction of these skeletons, adding that as per UN Resolution 46/1 adopted in 2021, the international community has the mandate to collect, consolidate, analyse and preserve information and evidence related to alleged human rights violations and crimes in Sri Lanka. ‘It is time for the UN to follow through on the mandate it holds. An international investigation must now be opened to ensure that the perpetrators of the Chemmani massacre are identified’, the statement continues.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath stated that Canada and the UK have informed the government that they will reintroduce Resolution 51/1 on Sri Lanka at the upcoming UNHRC session in September. Speaking at an interview yesterday (3rd), Herath noted that the government pays attention to the resolution. He added that the government expects to complete the process on the proposed Anti-Terrorism Act and publish it in the first week of September through a gazette.

“Police cannot question anyone without disclosing the reason” – Circular issued by acting IGP

A circular was issued to all police stations by the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), outlining procedures to be followed when summoning an individual to a police station in connection with a complaint. According to the circular, when a person is summoned to provide a statement related to a particular complaint, they must be informed of the contents of that complaint. The Attorney General (AG) informed the Supreme Court (SC) of the circular yesterday (3rd). The announcement was made during the hearing of a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed against the Cyber Crimes Division (CCD) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) by energy expert Mahinda Relapanawa, who was summoned to record a statement regarding a matter published on social media.

“Sigiriya will not be removed as a world heritage site” – Minister Sunil Senevi

Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Hiniduma Sunil Senevi stated that there is no intention to risk losing Sri Lanka’s UNESCO world heritage status and that a special programme is being implemented to protect these sites. He made these remarks yesterday (3rd) during a media briefing held in Colombo. Further elaborating, the minister noted that Sri Lanka is committed to safeguarding UNESCO world heritage sites. He explained that political interference in recent times had severely impacted the situation, particularly regarding the Galle Fort, which was at risk of being delisted due to such interventions. He added that the previous government’s approval process had contributed to unauthorised constructions in sensitive zones and that 124 unauthorised structures were identified at the Sigiriya archaeological site alone. 

Government not eager to give out deeds with Ranil’s signature: a total of 23,018 freehold deeds in the custody of the land commissioner and the Mahaweli Authority

Under the Urumaya programme initiated to grant ownership of government lands to permit holders and beneficiaries, 23,018 land deeds signed by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe have not been handed over to the recipients. According to reports, the government has withheld these deeds under the custody of the land commissioner and the Mahaweli Authority since September last year. It is further reported that the current administration is reluctant to issue these deeds due to the inclusion of the former president’s facsimile signature on the freehold land documents.

CID Director Shani Abeysekara commences work 

Dinamina

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shani Abeysekara assumed duties yesterday (3rd) as the director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). He was appointed to the position by the acting Inspector General of Police, with the approval of the National Police Commission. Prior to this appointment, Abeysekara served as the director of the Central Intelligence Bureau. He had also previously served as the director of the CID from 2017 to 2019.

Shots fired near the Kandana Police Station: Shots meant for Mangala Samaraweera’s personal secretary kills secretary’s brother-in-law instead; a contract commissioned by a mercenary gang that fled to Dubai; two mercenaries have been present

A shooting occurred near the Kandana Public Market, also close to the Kandana Police Station in the morning  yesterday (3rd). Police state that two unidentified gunmen arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire, targeting two people travelling in a car near the Kandana Public Market. While the suspects reportedly fled the scene afterward, papers report that suspicions have arisen that a gang that fled to Dubai had given the contract for the shooting. One person succumbed to his injuries, while the other injured individual is currently receiving further treatment at the Ragama Hospital. Police stated that Sameera Manahara, the former private secretary of the late Minister Mangala Samaraweera, who was travelling in the car was the intended target of the shooting. The deceased was identified as 50-year-old Upali Amunuwila, a resident of the Kandana area, who was reportedly the brother-in-law of Sameera Manahara.

Kahawatta turns into a battlefield following the death of a youth: villagers and police collide

A tense situation arose in Kahawatta yesterday (3rd) following the funeral of the youth that was shot and killed by gunmen dressed in police uniforms. The collision had begun following the deployment of the police to the residence of the deceased youth following the funeral. The police fired tear-gas to control the tense situation that had erupted between residents and the police. During the incident, relatives of the deceased and other villagers had pelted stones at police personnel. The villagers charged that the youth had been shot dead by drug traffickers for exposing their illegal activities.
