Great shock in Chemmani; skeletons exhumed during the process; two sets identified yesterday

Thamilan, Thinakkural, Virakesari

Two more human skeletons were identified at the Chemmani mass grave site yesterday (6th). Accordingly, 47 skeletons have been identified as of yesterday.  Thamilan reports that a drum magazine was recovered from the site and removed by the Bomb Disposal Unit on Saturday (5th). Thinakkural reports that there are visible marks of nails driven into a skull believed to be that of a child.

Calls for international investigations escalate; the mass grave in Chemmani resonates worldwide; massive protests in Tamil Nadu, London and Canada

Thinakkural reports that calls for international investigations on the Chemmani mass graves are escalating in several countries. Accordingly, protests were held in Tamil Nadu, London and Canada. Thinakaran reports that the protest in Tamil Nadu was organised by Naam Tamilar Katchi. 

Over 600 acres secretly grabbed by Sinhala people in Thirivachakulam in Vavuniya     

Thinakkural

Over 600 acres of paddy lands in the area of Thirivaithakulam in Vavuniya, which is one of the border villages of the Tamil people, have been secretly grabbed by the Sinhala people without any proper documents. The Vavuniya District organiser of the Tamil National People’s Front Thavapalan and other members of the local councils, along with land owners, visited the area. Thavapalan claimed that the encroachment has been taking place since 2009.

Bhathiya in critical condition; his life in danger; vets, along with the army and the villagers, battle to save his life

Lankadeepa, Dinamina, Aruna 

Bhathiya, a 35-year-old tusker, is in critical condition in the Polpithigama area after being shot by poachers two to three months ago. The tusker has sustained multiple gunshot wounds, with severe injuries to its trunk and front right leg, leaving it unable to feed itself or stand on its own. A significant rescue effort is underway, with veterinarians treating the animal while dedicated officials and villagers, including a farmer who donated his harvest, are feeding it by hand. The Sri Lanka Army has also been deployed to assist in the ongoing rescue effort.

“The supreme court order has been violated by increasing the number of students admitted to Grade One” – The Ceylon Teachers’ Union

The Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) has accused the government of violating a 2011 Supreme Court ruling by enrolling 40 students in Grade 1 classes instead of the mandated 35. According ot the CTU, this policy wrongfully continues the actions of previous ministers. It has also highlighted that in practice, the number of students in major schools often reaches 50 to 60, far exceeding any official limit. 

Vehicle revenue licences suspended until July 9: The system offline due to a technical error

Lankadeepa, Aruna 

The issuance of vehicle revenue licences has been suspended nationwide until Wednesday (9th) following a major technical failure in the operating system. The Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA), which runs the system, has acknowledged that this is the latest in a series of recent breakdowns. The all-island system was designed to allow motorists to renew a license for a vehicle registered in any province from any other location in the country. The ICTA has stated that it may take several days to restore the system and resume normal services.

 

750 suspects arrested over a two-day mission launched within seven police divisions

Divaina, Mawbima 

Police report that over 750 suspects were arrested during a special joint security operation conducted on July 4 and 5 in parts of the Western and Southern Provinces. The operations involved the police, Special Task Force (STF), army and the navy, targeting illegal drugs and other criminal activities. In the Southern Province, the operation covered the Galle, Matara and Elpitiya police divisions, with 3,288 individuals and 1,365 vehicles being searched.

The CID arrests former Eastern PC member and Pillayan’s associate, Iniya Bharathi

Kumaraswamy Pushpakumar alias Iniya Bharathi, who is a close associate of former State Minister Sivanesathurai Santhirakanthan alias Pillayan, has been arrested by the CID in connection with the investigation into the murder of Udayakumar, who was the chairperson of the Thirukoil Pradeshiya Sabha in 2006. Pushpakumar, who is a former member of the Eastern Provincial Council, has been detained for further investigations.

Police suspect an imprisoned organised criminal, Manna Ramesh of orchestrating a shooting in the Kosgama area early yesterday (6th) morning as an act of revenge. Two shooters on a motorcycle, reportedly using a 9 mm weapon, opened fire on a three-wheeler carrying the victims returning home from a musical show in Hanwella, injuring the intended target, Kandana Arachchige Sriyantha Kumara, alias Kotahera Podda (44), as well as a woman (30) and her daughter (12). The motive is believed to be retaliation for a past incident where Podda allegedly assaulted Manna Ramesh’s brother. A large-scale joint search operation involving several police stations and the Special Task Force (STF) is underway, with investigators reviewing CCTV footage, though no arrests had been made as of yesterday evening.
