Thinakkural: Speaking to the media, Lawyer Ranitha Gnanarajah claimed that a small child’s skeleton was found together with a large adult skeleton during excavation work at the Chemmani mass grave site on Tuesday (29th). FR petition filed against digital NIC project with India

Thamilan, Thinakkural, Virakesari

A fundamental rights (FR) petition has been filed in Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court seeking to nullify a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Sri Lankan and Indian governments concerning a digital National Identity Card (NIC) project. Social activist Lina Amani Rishard Hameed, the petitioner, argues that two related cabinet decisions were made covertly, without public or
parliamentary knowledge. The petition claims the MoU grants India access to sensitive biometric and
personal data, raising concerns about foreign interference in Sri Lanka’s sovereignty, economy, security and independence. It asserts that this violates citizens’ fundamental human rights, and therefore requests the court to invalidate the MoU and halt the digital NIC project’s implementation.

“Free visas for Israel a threat to national security” – Mujibur Rahman warns

Virakesari

SJB MP Mujibur Rahman condemned the government’s decision to grant free visas to 40 additional countries, calling the inclusion of Israel a completely wrong decision and a threat to national security. At a press conference on Wednesday (30th), he argued that offering a free visa to Israel, a nation accused of war crimes by the International Criminal Court, reverses Sri Lanka’s historical foreign policy of supporting Palestine. Rahman accused the NPP government of hypocrisy, noting that its leaders, including President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, had vocally supported the Palestinian cause before the election. He stated that the government is forgoing
significant foreign exchange revenue and must take responsibility for the consequences of its decision.

“The provincial council elections should not be delayed” – Sumanthiran

Virakesari

General Secretary of the ITAK M.A. Sumanthiran has insisted that the government must adopt the private member’s motion on the Provincial Council Election Amendment Bill already submitted by his party. He noted that the recent motion tabled by ITAK MP R. Shanakiyan is substantively the same as proposals he submitted in 2019 and 2023, and thus requires no further study for immediate passage. The statement follows remarks by Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Chandana Abeyratne that the government is studying the motion and plans to present its own proposal. Sumanthiran warned that the government should not use the pretext of drafting a new proposal to delay the provincial council elections further, calling any such attempt unacceptable.

Promotions not given to five ASPs and SPs: The Police Commission has violated fundamental rights – SC issues verdict

Dinamina

The Supreme Court has ruled that the National Police Commission violated the fundamental rights of four Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) and one Superintendent of Police (SP), who had been absorbed into the regular police service from the police assistant services division, by reclassifying them and denying them the promotions they were entitled to. It was also ordered that the five police officers who had been classified in that manner be properly granted the seniority and professional qualifications they were entitled to. The letters issued to those officers in this regard by the NPC were declared null and void by the court.

“Steps to make 1,000 postal assistants permanent” – Minister Nalinda Jayatissa

Dinamina

Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa stated that steps are being taken to make the services of 1,000 postal assistants permanent. The minister made this statement during a visit to observe the operations of the Central Mail Exchange of the Sri Lanka Postal Department on July 29. He further stated that the necessary steps for those recruitments will be taken without delay.
