Shritharan writes to president seeking permission to meet him to request start of discussions on the new constitution

Thinakkural, Virakesari

ITAK MP and parliamentary group leader Sivagnanam Shritharan has sent an urgent letter to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake requesting a meeting to discuss pressing issues faced by the Tamil-speaking people of the North and East. Shritharan has stated his belief that a timely, direct discussion could lead to solutions and foster national reconciliation. He has outlined seven key topics for the proposed discussion: initiating talks for a permanent political solution to the ethnic issue, the release of Tamil political prisoners, the release of private and military-occupied lands, resettlement in the Myliddy area of the Jaffna  District, arrests made under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, threats against journalists and independent media personnel and military interference in
civilian life and procedures.

Windmill work temporarily halted! Court reaches amicable resolution to the tense situation in Mannar yesterday

Thinakkural, Thamilan

Thamilan: Following a tense standoff in Mannar, an agreement was reached in the Mannar Magistrate’s Court yesterday (12th) to temporarily halt construction work on a controversial wind power project. The resolution was achieved after protesters, who had blocked five vehicles carrying large turbine components since the previous night, were represented in court by President’s Counsel
M.A. Sumanthiran. Police had initiated legal action against six protest leaders, including two priests, for causing a public nuisance. Under the court-mediated settlement, the five vehicles were allowed to enter Mannar island to unload the components on the condition that construction would be paused for the time being. Sumanthiran successfully argued against the police’s application, preventing the potential arrest of the protesters.
Thamilan, Thinakkural: To further address the issue, a meeting is scheduled for today (13th) at 3.30 pm at the Presidential Secretariat, which will include President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, five representatives from the protesting public organisations, Vanni District MPs and other officials.

“77 shootings in the South, nothing in the North; why such a large
number of military in the North?” –
Rajeevkanth

Thinakkural

Rajkumar Rajeevkanth of the People’s Struggle Alliance has questioned the heavy military deployment in the
North and East, contrasting the region’s peace with the ongoing violence in the South. Speaking at a press conference in Colombo, he pointed out that 77 shooting incidents have recently occurred in the South, while no such incidents have taken place in the North and East. He stated that over 12,000 rehabilitated former LTTE members have been living peacefully within the
community for the past 15 years without being involved in any violence. Given this peaceful situation, Rajeevkanth questioned the purpose of stationing such a large military force in the region.

Government to take appropriate action regarding Mullaitivu incident; innocent youth should not be sacrificed for political gain; intellectuals strongly condemn the actions of Tamil parties for 75 years

Thinakaran

Several commentators have argued that the recent hartal called by Tamil political parties following the death of a youth in Muthaiyankattu is a politically motivated act rather than a genuine effort to seek justice. London-based journalist S. Jeyabalan stated that the hartal stems from a three-way competition between the TNA, TNPF and the sangu (conch) alliance to appear as heroes for their vote-bank politics. Similarly, Jaffna civil society figure Arun Siddharth claimed that politicians are using the youth’s death to establish their relevance ahead of the upcoming provincial council elections and the UNHRC session.

Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Sunil Handunnetti stated that former Minister Chamara Sampath Dassanayake has been confirmed to have been directly involved in unlawfully maintaining the ilmenite excavation site in Aruwakkalu without any legal permission or fear. Handunnetti made the statement during an inspection tour of the site yesterday (12th). Minister Handunnetti further stated that this ilmenite excavation site, located within a highly environmentally sensitive zone along the border of the Wilpattu National Park, has been operated in a dangerously damaging manner without any fear due to the actions of certain politicians acting on their own accord. As a result, he said, even government officials have been left without the environment necessary to make decisions regarding such projects.

The railway general manager was fired for not allowing an illegal act – Railway trade unions

Aruna

Railway trade unions allege that General Manager of Railways Dhammika Jayasundara was removed from his position primarily for refusing to approve an illegal transaction within the department. General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Nidahas Railway Employees Union Janith Lankage emphasised this in a letter sent yesterday (12th) to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. He stated that this conspiratorial removal was carried out by a group including the minister and deputy minister of transport, who, according to him, created a false impression of the Railway Department to justify the action.

“There’s a possibility of giving a post to the transferred general manager” – Jayatissa

Aruna

Cabinet Spokesperson Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the cabinet has approved the attachment of Dhammika Jayasundara, who was removed from the position of general manager of Sri Lanka Railways, to the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, in a manner that enables his appointment to a suitable post in the special grade of the Sri Lanka Engineering Service. A cabinet proposal to terminate his services as the general manager of the Sri Lanka Railways Department was presented by the minister of transport, highways, ports and civil aviation, and the cabinet accordingly granted its approval.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday (12th), addressing the ’Youth Club’ National Youth Conference held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo, stated that with the beginning of the new political transformation, the youth movement in the country has transitioned from being a political pawn to a platform that cultivates competent leaders prepared to lead the nation’s future. The president stressed that the government’s goal is to establish a youth community empowered to shape its own future, ensuring that young people are given their rightful role rather than merely serving as contributors to the maintenance of political power. He further stated that a programme will be launched through the youth movement to transform young men and women into leaders and stakeholders in the country’s development path. The president added further that “this country was once under the control of a highly destructive group. We have taken over political power from that group. The power we now hold, we do so with the expectation that, in due course, we will pass the baton to you, the next generation. We do not wish to stay in these roles for an extended duration.”
