The Tamil National Council (TNC) submitted a memorandum to Indian Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, emphasising the necessity of India’s role in securing a permanent political solution for the Tamil people in Sri Lanka.
In its memorandum, the TNC rejected the government’s proposed “Aekiya Rajya” (unitary state) constitutional draft, asserting that it is weaker than the 13th Amendment and fails to protect the Tamil identity or sovereignty. They urged the Indian central government to pressure Sri Lanka to abolish the unitary system and establish a federal structure that recognises the Tamil nation’s right to self-determination. Furthermore, the council noted that India’s economic influence is a key lever, as Sri Lanka’s recovery and growth are heavily dependent on close ties with India and Tamil Nadu.
Virakesari: Indian Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan informed Tamil nationalist party leaders that New Delhi’s position on the full implementation of the Indo-Lanka Accord remains unchanged. During his meeting with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, discussions also focused on the delay in holding provincial council elections. Radhakrishnan noted that President Dissanayake signalled a positive stance on expediting these elections.

“An attempt to save Minister Jayakody and blame the secretary” – Wimal Weerawansa claimsThinakkural
National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa alleged that the resignation of the secretary to the Ministry of Energy was a calculated move to protect former Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody from allegations involving a coal scam. Speaking at a media briefing on Sunday (19th), Weerawansa claimed that while no prior accusations were made against the secretary, he was forced to resign to serve as a “scapegoat” for the fraudulent activity. Weerawansa warned public officials that the current administration would sacrifice them to shield corrupt ministers and asserted that both President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Jayakody would face legal consequences and potential imprisonment under a future government. |

The tea industry resting due to the war: Rs. 3.1 billion wasted per week; foreign exchange inflows also at risk; Middle East jobs destabilised; the tourism industry affected; 2,500 more individuals poverty-stricken – The UNDP reveals
Lankadeepa
The UNDP has released a preliminary assessment titled “Military Escalation in the Middle East: Human Development Impacts Across Asia and the Pacific,” identifying Sri Lanka as one of the most severely affected nations in the region.
The report highlights critical vulnerabilities across several key economic sectors due to the ongoing geopolitical volatility. Accordingly, the tea industry is facing weekly losses of Rs. 3.1 billion due to the situation in the Middle East, placing vital foreign exchange inflows at high risk.
The escalation has further destabilised the jobs of many migrant workers in the region and caused a nearly 40% drop in tourist arrivals. Consequently, these combined economic shocks are exhausting local buffers and pushing an additional 2,500 individuals into poverty.
The report emphasises that the rapid decline in trade and remittances necessitates urgent measures to protect the country’s most vulnerable populations.

Will not let the government blame the coal incident on the minister alone and save themselves – A statement from the joint opposition
Lankadeepa, Divaina, Dinamina, Aruna, Thamilan
The joint opposition issued a statement asserting that a minister’s resignation symbolically marks the acceptance of responsibility for a mistake or error committed regarding a serious and acute issue. The statement was issued regarding the resignation of Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody in relation to the purchase of sub-standard coal.
The statement further reads that it is by no means fair to wash one’s hands of the matter by assigning responsibility for the coal incident to the minister or to attribute sole responsibility to the minister alone. The joint opposition also states that the need to achieve some underlying purpose may have been behind the failure to follow tradition when awarding the tender, and that the government must collectively accept responsibility for the issue since the entire cabinet of ministers approved the process.
