Highlights the differences and nuances in reporting between Sinhala and Tamil newspapers.

Over the past week the Sinhala and Tamil press converged in relation to five main stories. The five stories were on the: (i) celebration of International Workers’ Day on May 1; (ii) Tamil actor Chandrasekaran Joseph Vijay’s victory at the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election; (iii) death by suicide of Assistant Director of the Department of External Resources Ranga Nishantha Rajapaksha; (iv) ongoing war between the US/Israel and Iran; and (v) investigations by the CIABOC into the 2013 Airbus transaction.
The Sinhala press exclusively featured two main stories, and they were on the: (i) cybercrimes reportedly occurring in Sri Lanka, and (ii) arrest of 22 monks for reportedly smuggling narcotics from Thailand.
The Tamil press exclusively featured two main stories, and they were on the: (i) demands for accountability and justice concerning past atrocities, including enforced disappearances and mass graves, including at Chemmani; and (ii) problems faced by the Hill Country Tamil community and the increase in wages of plantation workers
