Alleged attempt to merge three Tamil villages in Batticaloa with Ampara!

ITAK MP S. Rasamanickam claimed that preliminary steps are being taken to merge three Tamil villages in the Porativupattu Divisional Secretariat Division of the Batticaloa District with Sinhala divisions in the Ampara District.
Rasamanickam made these remarks following a discussion with the Porativupattu Divisional Secretary yesterday (25th), who stated that the secretariat had not been officially informed of such a meeting or decision regarding boundary delimitation.
The MP alleged that plans are underway to create a new village called Samagipura by merging 33rd Colony in Batticaloa with Kumarigama in Ampara, while also proposing to merge the villages of Ranamadu and Vellavely with divisions in the Ampara District.
He further asserted that these actions are a deliberate attempt to alter the ethnic demographics of the Batticaloa District and vowed to oppose the move.
Ban on military businesses in Point Pedro; council passes resolution
Thinakkural The Point Pedro Pradeshiya Sabha passed a resolution to ban all commercial activities operated by the military within its jurisdictional limits. During a session held yesterday (24th), the council asserted that military-run businesses, such as canteens and holiday homes, operate without paying local taxes and negatively impact the livelihoods of civilian traders. Members also expressed concern regarding the proximity of some establishments to schools and their impact on local youth. Furthermore, the council passed resolutions calling for the immediate repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and the withdrawal of the proposed Protection of the State from Terrorism Bill. Of the 19 members present, 15 voted in favour of the resolutions, while four NPP members abstained. |

A special interpellation debate on the current situation in Sri Lanka is scheduled to be held in the Norwegian parliament tomorrow (26). The proposal for this debate was brought forward by Khamshajiny Gunaratnam, a Norwegian Labour Party MP of Sri Lankan origin, and will feature an address by the Norwegian foreign minister. The discussion follows the completion of one year since the presidential, parliamentary, and local government elections in Sri Lanka. It aims to address the progress made regarding governance, democratic reforms, and anti-corruption measures, alongside local and international expectations. Special focus will also be placed on the current human rights situation, issues affecting ethnic and religious minorities, militarisation, accountability, and reconciliation. Gunaratnam noted that the debate intends to foster an international dialogue to ensure democratic principles and long-term stability in Sri Lanka. |

500,000 accumulated driving licences printed: 400,000 posted – Department of Motor Traffic

The Department of Motor Traffic has succeeded in completing the printing of nearly 500,000 driving licences, ending the delay in printing driving licences, which was a major issue faced by drivers in the country for over two years.
Accordingly, Commissioner General of Motor Traffic Kamal Amarasinghe stated that 491,000 driving licences have been printed for those who were on the waiting list for two years.
Amarasinghe added that 400,000 of those licence cards have been referred to the post and the remaining cards will be sent to the owners via post next month.
Customs officers protest with black armbandsLankadeepa, Divaina The Customs Trade Union Alliance launched a trade union action starting yesterday (24th), citing several unresolved requests, including promotions, that have been delayed for six years. The union stated that the government authorities have not provided any concrete solutions for these issues despite them being raised on numerous occasions. Accordingly, Customs officers have decided to wear black armbands while performing their duties at all Customs offices islandwide. |

A broad investigation into Makandure Madush’s shooting

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has commenced a broad investigation regarding the death of the notorious underworld criminal and drug trafficker Madush Lakshman, also known as Makandure Madush, who was shot while in the custody of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD).
The death occurred in the early hours of October 20, 2020, at an apartment complex near the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium within the Maligawatta police division.
Official police statements at the time indicated that Madush was shot and killed by the underworld while being taken to the apartment complex to point out a location containing 22 kg of heroin.

Central Environmental Authority halts construction of the International Cricket Stadium in Jaffna | “Constructions will not be halted” — Minister Nalinda Jayatissa

Chair of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA), Prof. Tilak Hewawasam, stated that instructions have been issued to suspend the ongoing construction of the first international cricket stadium to be built in Northern Sri Lanka, until the required Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is obtained and formal approval granted.
Hewawasam added that the order was issued after it was revealed that environmental clearance had not been secured for the development.
Cabinet Spokesperson, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, stated that the construction work of the Jaffna International Cricket Stadium will not be halted.
The minister made the statement during the cabinet media briefing held yesterday (24th) at the Department of Government Information.
Jayatissa said that the government has not taken a decision to stop its construction.
The minister further stated that there are a number of reports that must be completed at the commencement of any construction work, including environmental and feasibility reports.
The project is being implemented jointly and with the support of all ministries.
