“Support an international judicial
process” – Six French MPs urge their
government

Virakesari, Thinakkural

Six French MPs have issued a joint statement urging the French government to officially recognise that war crimes and crimes against humanity were committed against the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. They also called on their government to support the establishment of a credible international judicial process to address these violations. In their statement, the MPs cited the killing of thousands during the final phase of the war and the recent discoveries of multiple mass graves, including at
Chemmani, Thiruketheeswaram and Kokkuthoduvai, as evidence. The parliamentarians expressed concern that despite clear evidence, no effective steps have been taken to conduct independent investigations, highlighting what they describe as Sri Lanka’s longstanding culture of
impunity.

Minister Nanayakkara promised to address the issue within the legal framework and – acknowledging that amnesty is a presidential power – assured the families he would bring the matter to the president’s attention.
