Accountability mechanisms with UN technical assistance; Minister Vijitha Herath informs Volker Türk

Thinakkural, Thinakaran, Virakesari

Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath has informed UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk that the government is ready to implement an accountability process for human rights violations through a domestic mechanism, with technical assistance from the Human Rights Council.

The two met in Geneva on Wednesday (10th) during the 60th session of the UNHRC.

High Commissioner Türk expressed confidence that there is a new turn in the protection of human rights under the new government, following his official visit to Sri Lanka in June.

He stressed that this opportunity to conduct independent investigations into past violations and establish a proper accountability mechanism should not be missed.

“An internal mechanism can never be accepted; the government must act with justice” – says MP Selvam Adaikkalanathan

Thamilan, Virakesari, Thinakkural

Speaking in parliament yesterday (11th), Democratic Tamil National Alliance (DTNA) MP Selvam Adaikkalanathan stated that a domestic mechanism for accountability regarding human rights violations will never be accepted.

He asserted that any investigation must be conducted with international observation, expressing hope that the government will act justly.

In light of a strong UN resolution, he questioned the credibility of a domestic inquiry proposed by the foreign minister.

Adaikkalanathan also commended India for its firm stance on human rights and welcomed its call to implement the provincial council system for power devolution.

“A fair external investigation is needed!” – MP Shritharan emphasises in parliament
Thamilan, Virakesari, Thinakkural

Speaking in parliament yesterday (11th), ITAK MP S. Shritharan stated that war-affected people are demanding an external investigation because past domestic commissions have failed to deliver justice.

He noted that recommendations from bodies appointed under former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, such as the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission, were never implemented.

Shritharan called on the government to investigate recent allegations by Suppiah Ponnaiah alias ‘Satha’, a former EPDP associate, who claimed at a press conference on September 9 that the EPDP was responsible for the murders of journalist Nimalarajan and others.

He argued that the government’s refusal to permit an external probe is an attempt to protect the military and that justice and reconciliation are impossible without it.

Provincial Council elections to be held soon! That is also the government’s expectation – Nalinda

Thinakaran

Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the government expects to hold the Provincial Council elections soon.

However, he affirmed that the elections will be held at the first available opportunity.
