The Govi Aragala Viyaparaya (Farmers’ Struggle Movement) stated that a tense situation arose in the Angunukolapelessa area yesterday (12th) when a group of individuals from the JVP protested against a ‘Farmers’ Conference’ organised by the National Farmers’ Congress at the Uswewa Gemi Diriya Community Hall in Angunukolapelessa. The group which invaded the community hall claimed that the National Farmers’ Congress which was hosting the programme was an affiliate of the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP). Accordingly, a group of about 60 individuals who rushed to the scene questioned the event’s proceedings, which ensued in an altercation, creating a tense situation.
Four officers from the Wadduwa Police arrested over the death of father-of-one
Lankadeepa, Ada, Mawbima, Dinamina Four Police Constables (PCs) attached to the Wadduwa Police Station were arrested yesterday (12th) for allegedly assaulting a father-of-one, who had been apprehended and later died after vomiting blood at home, following his release on police bail. The arrested are to be produced before the Panadura Magistrate’s Court today (13th). Police Media Spokesperson SSP Buddhika Manathunga stated that in order to take disciplinary action against them, the four PCs in question have also been interdicted. |

Divaina, Dinamina The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) issued a warning regarding a rise in fraudulent job advertisements claiming to offer employment opportunities at the CBSL. These misleading advertisements, which are often shared on social media and unauthorised platforms, have been misusing the official logo of the CBSL to mislead job seekers. The CBSL clarified that it currently does not have any vacancies and that it does not post job vacancies on third-party social media pages. It noted that all official recruitment announcements are exclusively available on the CBSL website under the Careers section and through its verified social media channels. Accordingly, the CBSL urged the public to remain vigilant against such scams and to verify any job-related information directly through official CBSL platforms. |

The Legal Officers’ Association of the Attorney General’s Department firmly states that the Attorney General (AG) and officials involved in the relevant decision-making process have exercised their independent professional judgement in line with the esteemed traditions of the Attorney General’s Department regarding recent recommendations to discharge the three suspects in a case. The association declared that it will not hesitate to defend the AG against any attempts to remove him from office. Acting Secretary of the Legal Officers’ Association Tashya Gajanayake issuing a statement also stated that the Legal Officers’ Association of the Attorney General’s Department expresses its deep concern over certain recent factually incorrect and misleading statements circulating in the media relating to the advice dated 27th January 2025 issued by the AG.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday (12th) delivered a speech at the World Governments Summit 2025 held in the UAE. The president stated that it is a great privilege to speak at this significant gathering, held at a crucial juncture in human history, at a time when the world calls for unprecedented global cooperation. The Summit was attended by 4,000 delegates from 150 countries. While delivering the address, Dissanayake stressed the importance of coming together as global citizens as countries confront cross-border challenges. Dissanayake stated further that Sri Lanka is a beautiful island nation with a unique history, a present filled with optimistic dreams for the future and a citizenry that possesses broad political and social awareness. He added that the people of Sri Lanka have a deep sense of empathy for events occurring anywhere in the world. While they cherish their traditions, they also demonstrate the wisdom and openness necessary to embrace change when required. He finally urged that all nations must come together to create a beautiful life and a beautiful world.

There will be no power cut if Norochcholai has been restored: CEB decision on power cut to be made today

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) states that a decision on scheduled power cuts for tomorrow (14th) will be announced today (13th). Spokesperson for the CEB Dhammika Wimalaratne stated that the decision will be made after further studying the situation. The three generators at the Norochcholai power plant are yet to be restored, which has resulted in the loss of approximately 900 MW to the national grid. Following the breakdown at the Norochcholai plant which caused an islandwide power outage, the CEB scheduled 1.30h power cuts across the island.
