Thinakkural quotes Attorney Ranitha Gnanarajah as stating that around five skeletons are closely intertwined and it is difficult to count the exact numbers at this stage. She added that there are consultative discussions going on to combine the old case and the new case on Chemmani though they are separate but connected.

“It is not known whose guns were responsible for the Chemmani mass
grave deaths” – Wimal Weerawansa

Thinakkural

Leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF) Wimal Weerawansa claimed that just like the discovery of a school bag from a burial site in Chemmani, if further excavations are carried out the metal insignia of an army soldier may also be recovered. He added that, therefore, until the research work is completed, it will not be possible to reach a final conclusion as to whose skeletons they are. He also noted that it was a war zone and guns had been fired from all sides, and that it is not known now whose gun killed the people.

“Attempt to divert the background of
Chemmani” – Relatives of the disappeared

Virakesari

She also stated that the police, who may support the military, should be viewed with suspicion.

“24,000 acres of land will be released in Vavuniya” – Deputy Minister Susil Ranasinghe

Thinakkural

Deputy Minister Susil Ranasinghe claimed that though the gazette notification regarding land title has been suspended due to the case of M.A. Sumanthiran, they will create awareness among the public in the Vavuniya District through government officials, and end the issues related to land titles. He added that there are many land issues in the North and East. On the one hand people have lost their land rights and on the other hand they are unable to use their lands, he added further. He noted that steps have been taken to return 24,000 acres of land in the Vavuniya District.
