Virakesari: Addressing the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNNHRC) in Geneva yesterday (25th), Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath announced that a Truth and Reconciliation Commission will be established to investigate violations. He noted that the discussions regarding the commission will be conducted in a manner that will win the trust of all relevant stakeholders. Herath added that the commission, established in accordance with the country’s constitution, will operate independently and in a credible manner. He also explained to the council the steps his government has taken to improve the human rights situation in the country.
Thinakkural: Minister Herath engaged in discussions and met United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. Addressing the council, he spoke about human rights and international cooperation.
Thinakaran: Minister Herath clarified the steps the government has taken to protect the rights of minorities.

Two former Maga Neguma heads remanded over criminal misappropriation of government funds

Second reading of the budget passed in parliament with a majority of 109 votes

The second reading of the Appropriation Bill for the year 2025 (Budget 2025) was passed in parliament yesterday (25th) by a majority of 109 votes. Accordingly, 155 votes were cast in favour of the bill and 46 votes were cast against it. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as the minister of finance, presented the second reading of the Appropriation Bill for the year 2025 (Budget Speech) to parliament on February 17. The debate on the second reading of the Appropriation Bill (Budget) was held for seven days. The vote on the third reading of the budget for the financial year 2025 is scheduled to be held on March 21 at 6.00 pm.

The Colombo High Court yesterday (25th) granted bail for General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, who was sentenced to simple imprisonment for insulting the religion of Islam.The order was made after hearing a revision petition filed by Ven. Gnanasara Thera, seeking his release on bail as he had filed an appeal against the sentence. Divaina highlights that the magistrate’s decision to not grant bail for Ven. Gnanasara Thera was illegal and that lawyers of both parties agreed on the matter. The Colombo Magistrate’s Court sentenced Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera to nine months of simple imprisonment for insulting the religion of Islam in January this year.
