Thinakaran, Virakesari: Democratic Tamil National Alliance (DTNA) MP Amirthanathan (Selvam) Adaikkalanathan claimed that he had taken a decision to vote for the budget presented by the National People’s Power (NPP) headed by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake as it has proposals to fulfil the expectations of the ordinary people. He added that he welcomes the proposed development projects in the North and East.

Thinakkural: Spokesperson of the DTNA Suresh Premachandran claimed that the decision taken by Adaikkalanathan to vote for the second reading of the Budget 2025 was his personal decision, and not the decision of the party.

Seven Tamil parties agree to contest jointly | “No alliance with other parties; will join to establish governance after election” – M.A. Sumanthiran

Virakesari, Thinakkural: Spokesperson of the Democratic Tamil National Alliance (DTNA) Suresh Premachandran claimed that seven Tamil political parties have agreed so far to jointly contest in the upcoming local government election. He added that they expect to form a massive alliance across the North and East, and that discussions are underway with other parties as well.

Thinakkural: Acting General Secretary of the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) M.A. Sumanthiran claimed that as his party had already decided, it will contest in the upcoming local government election separately, and later [local] governments can be formed jointly [with other parties]. He noted that though the power of the central government is given in the hands of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the local authorities should be in their hands (Tamil parties).

The Election Commission urgently convenes today (27th) to discuss and finalise the date for filing
nominations and to decide on the date of the election. It is expected that the decision would be announced today or next week. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Elections Achchuthan Sivasubramaniam stated that the Election Commission considers holding the election by June 2, and that there is a possibility to conduct it in the first week of May.

The first vehicle consignment from Japan to arrive in Hambantota today

Lankadeepa, Divaina, Dinamina, Aruna

The first consignment of vehicles to be imported from Japan to Sri Lanka, following the relaxation of import restrictions, is scheduled to reach Hambantota Port today (27th). Accordingly, 196 vehicles have been imported to Sri Lanka in the first consignment, which is scheduled to reach Hambantota Port at 11.00 pm tonight. It is also reported that seven more vehicles have been imported from Japan, which are scheduled to reach the Hambantota Port tomorrow (28th).

“The UNHRC follows double standards” – Former president Wickremesinghe states

Former president Ranil Wickremesinghe stated that the United Nations Human Rights Council treats Ukraine and Sri Lanka differently and follows double standards in the treatment of the two countries. The former president also pointed out that the current government as well as other political parties should consider this matter seriously. Wickremesinghe made the statement when he met with a group of young lawyers at his office in Colombo yesterday (26th).

Milk powder brought for the consumption of animals fed to humans; animal feed supplier imprisoned for four months

An animal feed supplier in Kuliyapitiya was imprisoned for four months over using false information, repackaging and releasing a stock of milk powder issued for animal feed to the market for human consumption. He was sentenced to four months imprisonment with hard labour and was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 10,000. A stock of 160 metric tons of milk powder in the possession of the businessperson was also ordered to be destroyed under the supervision of the court.

Cannot extradite Arjuna Mahendran: A strict verdict from Singapore

The Government of Singapore has strictly stated that it cannot extradite former Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Arjuna Mahendran who has been levelled with allegations in connection to the CBSL bond scam. Singapore made the statement following another attempt made by the Attorney General’s (AG) office of Sri Lanka to extradite Mahendran. Singapore government officials state that they cannot extradite anyone who is a citizen of Singapore.

The Airbus deal: Namal questioned for five hours; “Stop political revenge and find solutions for the issues” – Namal Rajapaksa

SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa was called to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (26th) in order to provide a statement regarding investigations into an Airbus deal in connection with SriLankan Airlines. Rajapaksa accordingly appeared at the CID yesterday (26th) and left the premises after recording a five hour statement on the matter. Allegations had recently surfaced regarding an improper financial transaction between Airbus and SriLankan Airlines in connection with the national carrier’s 2013 purchase of six Airbus A330 and eight A350 aircraft. Talking to reporters following his visit to the CID, Rajapaksa stated that the government must try to find solutions for the problems of the country rather than pursuing political vengeance. He added that the government was in pursuit of them to cover up all of its mistakes. He also stated that he has no actual connection with the Airbus deal.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka Vijitha Herath delivered a statement at the High-Level Segment of the 58th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva yesterday (26th). In the statement, Herath stressed that the government is committed to protecting the human rights of all of Sri Lanka’s citizens. Herath added that the preparations for a truth and reconciliation framework will be further discussed with the broadest possible cross-section of stakeholders before operationalisation to ensure a process that has the trust of all Sri Lankans. This will include strengthening the work towards a truth and reconciliation commission empowered to investigate acts of violence caused by racism and religious extremism that give rise to tensions within Sri Lankan society.
