“India will continue to support Sri Lanka’s growth” – The acting Indian high commissioner to Sri Lanka

Addressing the 76th Republic Day of India celebrations held in Colombo, acting Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Dr. Satyanjal Pandey stated that India will continue to support Sri Lanka’s growth. Pandey noted that discussions are underway regarding several initiatives including the establishment of a multi-product pipeline between India and Sri Lanka, the Sampur Solar Power Plant and the supply of liquefied natural gas. Pandey also stated that India and Sri Lanka are not only fellow democracies, sharing diversity and dynamism, but also civilisational partners, sharing history, language, religion and ethos.

33 Indian fisherfolk arrested

The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) seized three Indian fishing boats and apprehended 33 Indian fisherfolk off the coast of Mannar yesterday (26th). The SLN arrested the Indian fisherfolk during a special operation conducted to curb illegal fishing activities inside the territorial waters of Sri Lanka. The arrested fisherfolk were taken to Iranaitivu to commence legal proceedings.

A huge protest in Kilinochchi on Sri Lanka’s Independence Day

The organisations representing the relatives of missing persons in the Northern and Eastern Provinces stated that a huge protest would be held in Kilinochchi on Sri Lanka’s Independence Day (February 4). These organisations called on the public to support the protest and demand justice for the missing persons. The organisations made this statement to the media following a meeting held in Mullaitivu to appoint their committee members.

“Eating pol sambol was the national crime we committed” – Namal Rajapaksa

Following the arrest of his brother Yoshitha Rajapaksa by the CID on January 25, SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa arrived at the CID premises and remarked: “The police acted promptly. On Saturday (January 25), they came to Colombo early to carry out the attorney general’s orders. After failing to locate Yoshitha, they stopped him at the Beliatta exit, recorded a statement, and at public expense, used multiple vehicles to transport him securely to the CID in Colombo. If the police had worked with the same efficiency to deal with the underworld, they would have known about the five killings at the same Beliatta exit.” He further commented, “If they claim we have committed crimes against the nation, then eating pol sambol (a Sri Lankan dish made of grated coconut) must be that national crime.”

“Drivers will initiate trade union action if delays in container clearance continue” – The Container Transport Owners’ Association

Chairperson of the Container Transport Owners’ Association Sanath Manjula indicated that drivers may initiate trade union action if delays continue in the clearance of containers. He further stated that as of yesterday (26th), approximately 2,600 containers remained at the port. Manjula emphasised that drivers are experiencing significant hardships due to these ongoing delays.

“Adani’s wind power projects have not been terminated” – Jayatissa

Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa clarified at a media briefing on January 25 that the government has not decided to cancel the wind power projects planned by the Adani Group in Mannar and Pooneryn. He stated that the new administration has opted to review these projects and a review committee has been appointed for this purpose. A statement from the Adani Group, as reported by Divaina, also confirmed that the projects have not been terminated.

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva stated yesterday (26th) that the NPP will establish committees to oversee ministries. These committees will comprise MPs and experts from each respective sector who have volunteered for the role. Silva noted that each committee will include 10-15 members. He also pointed out that similar mechanisms can be observed in countries like China and Vietnam.

The president vows to control rice prices, raise public sector salaries, and ensure there is no interference in legal proceedings

Today’s newspapers report several remarks made by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at public gatherings over the weekend. Dinamina, Aruna, Lankadeepa and Mawbima report a statement where speaking at a gathering in Homagama, the president pledged to enforce rice price controls, requesting two weeks to address the rice issue. Divaina, Virakesari and Thinakaran report that the president revealed certain legal officers had been delaying cases until a government free of political interference was in power and assured that these officers now have the independence to carry out their duties. Meanwhile, Lankadeepa, Thinakkural, Thinakaran and Thamilan report the president’s statements from a gathering in Anuradhapura where he disclosed that proposals for a fair basic salary increase for public officials and measures to resolve pension disparities within three years will be included in this year’s budget.

Yoshitha to be presented in court today

On January 25, the Colombo additional magistrate ordered Yoshitha Rajapaksa, a son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, to be produced in court today (27th) in connection with an alleged purchase of land and a house in Ratmalana using illegally obtained funds. The order followed his arrest by the CID in Beliatta, after which he was brought to Colombo and presented at the additional magistrate’s official residence. Rajapaksa was also interrogated for around four hours under charges related to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
