Statements regarding the UK sanction

Virakesari, Thamilan: Quote former Navy Commander, Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda as stating that justice was not delivered for British colonial atrocities, pointing out that Britain has never apologised for its past actions, and questioning why it remains silent on ongoing global conflicts like those in Gaza, Syria, Afghanistan and Libya.

ThinakaranThinakkural: Quote Karannagoda as stating that these sanctions are not about justice but are a direct result of international political maneuvering; they demand accountability from those who risked their lives to end a war that
claimed thousands of innocent lives.

ThinakaranVirakesariThinakkural: Quote Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman as saying that “the sanction imposed on me following the establishment of the East Tamil Alliance is a political drama.”

Responding to queries in the Indian parliament regarding the continuous arrest of Indian fisherfolk by the Sri Lanka Navy, Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar stated that India has traditionally considered the issue of Indian fisherfolk in Sri Lanka a matter of concern, adding that the continuous violation of Sri Lankan maritime boundaries by Indian fisherfolk is complicating efforts to find an amicable solution to the issue. Jaishankar noted that there are two laws in Sri Lanka – the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Act of 1996 and the Foreign Fishing Vessels Fisheries Regulation Act of 1979, and that amendments were made to both these laws in 2018 and 2023. He further added that due to this, Indian fishermen who cross the Sri Lankan maritime boundaries are being subjected to very severe punishments, large fines and detention.

“19 of 16,966 missing persons found alive; 3,742 soldiers and police also missing” – J. Thatparan

Executive Director of the Office on Missing Persons (OMP) J. Thatparan claimed that the commission has
so far found 19 of 16,966 missing persons alive. Addressing a media conference organised by the
commission in Jaffna on Wednesday (26th), he said that 3,742 soldiers and police personnel have also gone missing.

“People cannot afford milk powder, rice and coconuts; President Anura has forgotten about the proletariat” – Premadasa

Mawbima, Dinamina

Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa stated that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake who represented the proletariat has forgotten his own class after he became president. He added that neither the president nor the government understand the hardships people go through while being unable to afford milk powder, rice and coconuts. He stated that the president and the government do not feel the pulse of the people. Premadasa further added that when the people are facing various problems, the government and government representatives are only complaining. He stressed further that hospitals lack essential medicines and there is a serious shortage of medicines in the country in general. 

Allied health sciences strike

Ada, Dinamina, Aruna

The Students’ Union of the Allied Health Sciences Faculty of the University of Peradeniya staged a protest in front of the Ministry of Health, Colombo yesterday (27th) demanding that the government abolish the exam system for recruiting allied health sciences graduates into the government health services. Magistrate Lochani Abeywickrama Weerasinghe issued an interim injunction yesterday (27th) suspending the protest that was conducted by the graduates until 6 pm today (28th).

Four of Yoshitha’s friends remanded over the nightclub scene

General Secretary of the SLPP, Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam, stated that Yoshitha Rajapaksa is not a member of the SLPP and that he is only the brother of the national organiser of that party and the son of the leader of the party.

Kariyawasam made the statement in response to a question raised by a journalist at a media conference held yesterday (24th) regarding a recent clash at a nightclub. He added that there were many people that visit clubs and that the police had conducted an investigation into the incident, but that no legal action had been taken against Yoshitha Rajapaksa as a result of the investigation.

 

13 including the Mahaweli Authority must be abolished – Review committee on state-owned non-commercial entities states

The review committee on state-owned non-commercial entities has recommended that 13 state owned non-commercial entities including the Mahaweli Authority be liquidated and abolished. The report further reads that nine other such companies must operate as commercial entities while seven others must be reorganised. It also states that 21 such companies must be combined together.

Chamara Sampath remanded: Banned from travelling overseas

The Colombo chief magistrate yesterday (27th) remanded Badulla District MP of the New Democratic Front (NDF) Chamara Sampath Dassanayake till April 10 for costing the government a loss of Rs. 17.3 million. Dassanayake was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) yesterday (27th) after recording a statement in relation to an irregularity that occurred during his tenure as the chief minister of the Uva Province. The MP was subsequently presented before the Colombo chief magistrate for two other cases who ordered the suspect to be released on a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and two sureties of Rs. 5 million each. Furthermore, the Colombo Magistrate’s Court imposed an overseas travel ban on MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake who has also been ordered to hand over his passport to the court.

Two judges withdraw from the Krrish case involving Namal [Rajapaksa]

Colombo High Court judges Manjula Thilakaratne and Sujeewa Nissanka, making an announcement, have decided to recuse themselves from the case against SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa related to the controversial Krrish tower project. Judge Manjula Thilakaratne informed the court yesterday (27th) that the case will be referred to Colombo High Court judge Sujeewa Nissanka. However, judge Sujeewa Nissanka also announced his decision to recuse himself from the case. Accordingly, the case has been referred to Colombo High Court judge Adithya Patabendige to select a suitable judge to handle the case which will be taken up again on May 21, 2025.
