General Secretary of the ITAK M.A. Sumanthiran has expressed gratitude to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the cabinet of ministers for reversing the gazette notification issued on 28.03.2025 under Section 4 of the Land Settlement Ordinance. In a letter to the president yesterday (27th), signed by Sumanthiran and ITAK President C.V.K. Sivagnanam, the ITAK requested that the government’s decision to reverse the previous gazette be published in a new gazette. They added that if the gazette had not been reversed, they would have been forced to organise public protests. The letter highlights that many people were settled in different places after the tsunami, and still many of them have not received deeds for the land, adding that enforcing the law in such a situation will create confusion. It further noted that many lands are still under the custody of the military, and the government’s election promise of releasing them has still not been fulfilled.

“We granted Malini Fonseka the highest honour possible according to the family’s wishes” – Nalinda Jayatissa
Lankadeepa, Divaina, Ada, Aruna Cabinet Spokesperson Nalinda Jayatissa was questioned over the government’s decision to conduct the final rites of late veteran actor Malini Fonseka with state patronage at Independence Square in Colombo instead of giving full state honours as announced earlier. Questions were raised as to why the government had previously stated that Fonseka’s funeral ceremony would be given full state honours, but later provided state patronage. In response, Minister Jayatissa stated that the funeral was conducted in accordance with the wishes of the family and that the family was satisfied. He added that there are several criteria to grant full state patronage and honours when conducting a funeral of a prominent figure and that the process and methods have been structured regarding how the government should act on such occasions, whether it is full state honours or other forms of patronage. |
