Indictments filed against Namal Rajapaksa over the Rs. 70 million ‘Krrish’ deal

The Attorney General (AG) yesterday (28th) filed indictments against SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa on charges of criminal misappropriation of Rs. 70 million in connection with the ‘Krrish’ project. The AG then forwarded the indictments to the Colombo High Court, alleging that Rajapaksa misappropriated funds by receiving Rs. 70 million from the Indian real estate company for the development of rugby in Sri Lanka. While the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) had previously presented facts related to the case to the Fort Magistrate’s Court, Namal Rajapaksa was previously arrested as a suspect in the case and produced before the court, but later released on bail.

The Government of India lodged strong objections with Sri Lanka over an incident where the Sri Lanka Navy fired shots during the apprehension of 13 Indian fisherfolk in the Northern seas of Sri Lanka. Out of the 13 fisherfolk that were on board the fishing vessel, two sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. Three other fisherfolk received minor injuries and have been treated for the same. The shots had been fired accidentally when a fisherfolk tried to grab the firearm from a naval serviceperson.

Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stated that although the government has issued an extraordinary gazette notification regarding vehicle imports, no decision has yet been made on lifting the import bans on certain other personal vehicles such as cars and motorbikes. Speaking at the weekly cabinet media briefing held yesterday (28th), Jayatissa noted that the government is concerned regarding personal motor vehicles, as they are likely to place additional pressure on foreign reserves. He added that decisions regarding other vehicles would be taken after assessing the impact of lifting the current import ban on the country’s foreign reserves.

CID investigations on a letter that was sent under Ranil’s name

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has informed the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court that a special investigation has been launched regarding a letter prepared on his letterhead and signed by former president Ranil Wickremesinghe to be issued to the security forces in 2022 to create the necessary environment for a person in the Southern Province who is engaged in illegal trafficking to continue that trafficking. The CID informed the court about this by filing a motion.

“A 4% economic growth rate [to be expected] in 2025” – President

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated while attending the opening ceremony of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce yesterday (28th) that Sri Lanka will achieve an economic growth rate of over 4% in 2025. President Dissanayake further stated that the main thrust sectors such as tourism, shipping and logistics and information and communication technology have been identified to achieve the aforementioned economic growth rate. He added that the government is also investing heavily to expand the port sector.

 

“LG election to take place in April” – Nalinda  Jayatissa

Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the Local Government (LG) election will take place in April this year. He added that the Supreme Court verdict regarding the election has been received by the Speaker, and that it will be revealed to parliament soon. He added further that the Election Commission (EC) will assign a suitable date to hold the election in accordance with the Supreme Court verdict that was issued.
