“The president’s statement cannot be accepted. Did Prabhakaran fight for peace?” – Sarath Fonseka

Virakesari, Thinakkural

Former Army Chief and former MP Sarath Fonseka questioned President Anura Kumara’s statement that everyone in the country fought for peace, pointing out that LTTE Leader Prabhakaran did not. Fonseka emphasised that while the end of the war was positive for Sri Lanka’s survival, the country’s progress since then has been unsatisfactory. He warned that removing military camps and checkpoints in the North and East without thorough, technical discussions on national security could lead to harmful consequences including increased criminal activity and instability. He highlighted recent changes such as the removal of the Elephant Pass checkpoint, which, while allowing freer movement for Tamils, also risks enabling underworld groups to smuggle weapons and drugs. Fonseka also expressed concern about the ongoing threat posed by separatist narratives promoted by certain politicians in the North, which he said are used to gain votes but ultimately endanger the country’s unity. He urged Sri Lanka to prioritise national security above financial concerns, warning that weakening security measures could allow militant groups like the LTTE to re-emerge. Fonseka stressed that national security is a serious responsibility that cannot be treated lightly or outsourced, and that the country must be prepared to face potential external and internal threats.

“Preventing child abuse in schools: Principals must take urgent steps to curb child abuse in schools” – Prime
minister

Thinakaran, Thamilan

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has called on school principals to act swiftly to prevent and address abuse and torture of students within schools. Speaking at an event held at the Ministry of Education on the 27th, the PM highlighted the increasing incidents of child abuse and stressed that schools must be safe environments
for children. Dr. Amarasuriya emphasised that protecting children’s rights is a fundamental responsibility of the State, in line with Sri Lanka’s commitments under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of the Child. She urged principals to take immediate action against any form of abuse — physical, sexual, emotional or neglect — and warned that neglecting such cases could cause lasting harm to students and undermine the school system. The PM also called for teachers and education officials to be trained in identifying and preventing child abuse, understanding legal protections and providing compassionate support to children. She noted that the government’s ‘Prosperous Nation, Beautiful Life’ policy prioritises child protection as a key objective.

“Reclaiming  Kachchatheevu Island is the only way to end fisherfolk’s suffering” – Tamil Nadu CM Stalin

Thinakkural, Thamilan

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has stressed that reclaiming Kachchatheevu is essential to ending the ongoing hardships faced by
fisherfolk due to territorial disputes with Sri Lanka. Speaking at the inauguration of a new fishing port in Thiruvotriyur, Stalin highlighted that Tamil Nadu fisherfolk’s traditional fishing rights have been affected by Sri Lanka’s control over Kachchatheevu Island, causing frequent arrests and hardships. He noted that 1,164 fisherfolk detained abroad have been released after persistent appeals, but 23 remain in custody. Stalin has written over 70 letters to Prime Minister  Narendra Modi and the external affairs minister seeking their release and pushed for a legislative resolutions demanding
Kachchatheevu’s return. He also announced several welfare schemes and infrastructure projects to support fisherfolk and their families, emphasising Tamil Nadu’s commitment to safeguarding their livelihoods.
