UNP General Secretary Thalatha Athukorala, speaking to the media in Kandy yesterday (30th), stated that the main objective is to advance the discussions between the two parties to the level of preparing the candidate list for the local
government elections. She further said that the discussions regarding the merger of the two parties have reached a successful stage, but that the leadership and symbol have not been discussed yet.

Thamilan highlights a vow by Thalatha Athukorala that she will not rest until she unites both parties.

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new Sri Lankan Tamil rehabilitation camp in Trichy, which will be built at a cost of Rs. 33.29 crore. The foundation stone laying ceremony was held last Tuesday. The camp will be built on 10.167 acres in the Kulavaipatti area of Trichy East constituency, near the Trichy-Pudukkottai Road.

Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the constitution does not state anywhere that former presidents should be maintained with public tax money or that they should be given houses. Meanwhile, he added that the act on the privileges of presidents only states that a suitable house can be provided or one-third of their pension can be provided, and that, accordingly, they are looking into the issue of providing them with suitable houses. He made this statement to the media regarding the removal of the privileges of former presidents.

 

Is the government using some Tamil factions to create controversy over the new constitution?: Sumanthiran suspects

Spokesperson of the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi and former MP M.A. Sumanthiran stated that there is a suspicion that the government itself is using some people from the Tamil side to create a controversy regarding the new constitution and make an excuse that the Tamil people are not clear about it. He mentioned this at a media briefing held at the Vadamaraatchi Media House in Point Pedro, Jaffna. He further stated that the new government is saying that it has a solution, and they are eager to know it. However, they have no intention of finding out about Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam’s opinion.

Another pyramid scheme worth Rs.30 billion: Six company heads and secretary banned from overseas travel

Colombo Chief Magistrate Tanuja Lakmali ordered yesterday (30th) to impose an overseas travel ban on seven individuals including the head and six directors of a company that carried out a pyramid scheme worth millions by reportedly deceiving thousands of people across the island who were promised online jobs. The chief magistrate made the order after considering a request made by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Officials of the CID who informed the court that this pyramid scheme was carried out through a website called Banner Cut, also informed that they had received 724 complaints in this regard.

The College of Community Physicians of Sri Lanka (CCPSL) President Dr. Kapila Jayaratne said that policymakers will be informed to bring a law banning or restricting the use of social media by children under 18, as has been done in some countries. It was reported, according to unofficial data, that nearly 200 children under 18 have died by suicide last year (2024), and that the use of social media may be a reason for these incidents and also for the rise in HIV cases and underage pregnancies.

Financial fraud amounting to Rs. 14 million: Two CEB heads sacked; additional finance manager suspended

After a formal investigation confirmed that a financial fraud of Rs. 14 million had been committed through a fraudulent tender process, two high-ranking officials of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) were dismissed and another officer accused of complicity in misconduct has been suspended. Directors of CEB had made the decision at a meeting that was held recently. The deputy general manager of the CEB has been confirmed to be involved in the fraud through this fraudulent tender process conducted in the year 2023. 33 charges were filed against him and he was found guilty of 31 of them.

Mavai Senathirajah’s funeral to be held in Maviddapuram, Jaffna on Sunday

The remains of Leader of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) and former MP Mavai Senathirajah have been placed for public homage at his residence in Maviddapuram, Jaffna. The funeral is scheduled to take place on Sunday (2nd) at Maviddapuram, Jaffna.

Thamilan highlights a statement by Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa, in which he stated that Mavai was a realist in the Tamil political arena. Premadasa added that Mavai believed in a journey of finding unity in diversity and a common goal.

Virakesari also quotes Premadasa stating that Senathirajah’s demise is a great loss for the Tamil community, and that he spent five decades in politics raising his voice for the rights of the Tamil people through moral struggle and imprisonment.

Misappropriation of Rs. 183 million from the Cooperative Fund: Former ministry secretary who was arrested by the CID granted bail

Former Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration Priyantha Mayadunne, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (30th) over alleged financial misappropriation, was granted bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court. Accordingly, Mayadunne was ordered to be released on a personal bail of Rs. 200,000 after being produced before the Fort magistrate. The CID arrested Mayadunne in connection with investigations into the alleged misuse of Rs. 183 million obtained from the Cooperative Fund for the ‘Isuru Saviya’ commemoration event held in Kurunegala in 2011 to celebrate International Cooperative Day.
