Doctor shortage causes crisis in hospitals; GMOA urge immediate solution
Thamilan
A severe shortage of doctors is causing a major crisis in hospitals across the country, jeopardising patients’ right to quality healthcare, health sector professionals have warned. Dr. Prasad Colombage, a member of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) Executive Committee, stated that the Minister of Health and senior Ministry officials bear the full responsibility for resolving this issue. Colombage highlighted that the shortage means that even with the dedication of doctors, there are severe delays in treatment: surgical procedures are being postponed for years, laboratory tests for some treatments are being delayed by several years, and patients have to wait for months to secure an appointment with a doctor. The medical professionals stressed that the doctor shortage is the primary reason for the hospital crisis and the denial of quality service to patients. |
“With the government holding a two-thirds majority, India should not miss the opportunity; Is India’s inaction on the 13th Amendment due to incapacity or lack of concern for Tamils? – Justice Wigneswaran questions
Thinakkural, Virakesari Tamil People’s Alliance (TPA) Secretary-General, Justice C.V. Wigneswaran, expressed profound disappointment and suspicion over India’s continued reluctance to pressure the Sri Lankan government to fully implement the 13th Amendment and hold Provincial Council elections. Speaking at the opening of the TPA’s new headquarters in Jaffna, he stated that this inaction has led to a sense of distrust among both local and diaspora Tamils towards India, questioning if it stems from an inability or lack of concern. Wigneswaran noted that the current government “appears to share the previous regime’s mindset regarding land acquisition,” with 65,000 acres of state land still held by the military in the Northern Province, even as the government is commended for its efforts against corruption, economic decline, and organised crime. He urged India not to miss the opportune moment to leverage the current administration’s two-thirds majority to enforce the full implementation of the 13th Amendment, calling it a moral obligation based on his enduring faith in the bilateral relationship. |

The former judge, who retired on 20 January 2025, said this denial cost him an additional four years of service in the Appellate and Supreme Courts. He revealed that four letters sent to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake seeking clarification on the matter received no response, adding that he had only sought the legal right due to him, which was ultimately denied. |
