Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) Leader MP Mano Ganesan, along with MPs P. Thigambaram and V. Radhakrishnan, met President Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday (2nd) at the Presidential Secretariat.
During the meeting, the president accepted a request to appoint a high-level official at the Presidential Secretariat to handle issues concerning upcountry and southern Tamils, appointing Chief of Staff Prabath Chandrakeerthi to the role.
Discussions focused on addressing long-standing grievances related to land rights, housing, teacher shortages in Tamil-medium schools, and the inclusion of Tamils in public administration and the police force.
MP Ganesan noted that the president agreed to implement future agreements on these matters through relevant ministries.
Excavation at Kurukkalmadam mass grave suspended
Thinakaran Excavation work at the Kurukkalmadam mass grave has been temporarily suspended after three days of searching yielded no human remains. Despite digging to a depth of six feet at the identified site under the orders of the Kaluwanchikudy Magistrate’s Court, the area was refilled with soil on April 1. The excavation aimed to locate the remains of 170 Muslims who were reportedly abducted and killed in 1990 while returning from Hajj. Authorities have now decided to continue the search at a different location previously identified through scanning. |
Archaeological restrictions hinder development at Thanthamalai Murugan TempleThinakkural
ITAK MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam visited the historic Thanthamalai Murugan Temple in Batticaloa following reports that development and renovation projects have been stalled due to Archaeological Department regulations. The temple is reportedly situated on land gazetted as an archaeological site, requiring formal department approval before any structural work can proceed. While acknowledging the need to protect heritage sites, MP Rasamanickam asserted that archaeological designations should not be used as a pretext to seize ancestral Tamil lands. He further highlighted similar restrictions in the Neyilikkal Mountain area of the Koralai Pattu South Divisional Secretariat Division and committed to discussing the matter with relevant ministers in parliament to secure the necessary permits. |

Kapila [Chandrasena] remanded again over the Airbus deal; warrants issued for his spouse and Shamindra [Rajapaksa]
Divaina, Lankadeepa
Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama issued open warrants yesterday (2nd) for the arrest of Shamindra Rajapaksa and Priyanka Niyomali Wijenayake over the SriLankan Airlines Airbus bribery incident.
The magistrate ordered the controller general of immigration and emigration to detain the suspects upon arrival and notified airport authorities to alert the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).
Meanwhile, former SriLankan Airlines CEO Kapila Chandrasena was remanded until April 17 after the court rejected his bail application, citing a lack of exceptional circumstances and concerns over leaked confidential statements.
Attempt to extort Rs. 64 million to reclaim a land in Meethotamulla: Prasanna Ranatunga fined Rs. 25 million; trial continued for 11 years; Rs. 15 million extortedDinamina The Colombo High Court ordered former Minister Prasanna Ranatunga to pay a fine of Rs. 25 million yesterday (2nd). Ranatunga was previously found guilty of threatening a businessperson and attempting to extort Rs. 64 million as a bribe to approve the reclamation of a land in Meethotamulla, Kolonnawa. While the court had sentenced him to two years of rigorous imprisonment suspended for five years, he was also ordered to pay Rs. 1 million in compensation to the victim. The recent court order follows Ranatunga’s decision to withdraw his appeal against the 2022 conviction, provided that the court granted him sufficient time to pay the prescribed fine and compensation. Consequently, the court permitted the withdrawal of the appeal while upholding the financial penalties. |
Minister Kumara Jayakody, who is accused of corruption and is currently out on bail, will not resign, nor will he be removedAnidda Internal government sources indicate that Minister of Energy Kumara Jayakody, who has been indicted by the Colombo High Court on charges of corruption, will not resign from his ministerial post. The sources also indicate that the president is unlikely to take steps to remove him. The view being discussed among government leaders is that if he were to resign or be removed from his post, it would be seen as handing a victory to the opposition. Charges filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) allege that he caused a loss of Rs. 8.8 million to the state in 2016 while employed at the Ceylon Fertiliser Company. Cabinet Spokesperson Nalinda Jayatissa confirmed on March 31 that no decision has been made to remove the minister. However, the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA) has called for his immediate resignation, arguing that his continued tenure undermines the independence of the CIABOC and the public trust placed in that institution. |

Water cuts from yesterday for many areas in Colombo
Aruna, Dinamina, Divaina, Lankadeepa, Thinakaran, Thamilan, Thinakkural
The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has initiated phased 24-hour water cuts in several areas of the Colombo District, including Padukka, Hanwella, and Maharagama, due to a sharp decline in water levels at the Kalatuwawa and Labugama reservoirs.
Speaking at a media briefing yesterday (2nd), NWSDB Chairperson Chandana Bandara stated that water levels at Kalatuwawa are sufficient for only 20 days (22 days according to Aruna), while Labugama has a capacity for 50 days, necessitating immediate management measures until at least April 20.
The chairperson further noted that while water production has not been reduced up to now, increased consumer demand during the dry spell and the upcoming festive season have strained the distribution network.
To manage the crisis, the NWSDB has cancelled leave for all staff members performing maintenance and service duties, and also appointed a special operations committee to monitor the production and distribution of drinking water.
The GMOA strike inconveniences patients | The GMOA on strike again, the patients in difficulties
Aruna, Dinamina, Divaina, Lankadeepa, Thamilan, Virakesari, Thinakaran
The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) launched a 24-hour island-wide strike from 8:00 a.m. yesterday (2nd) to 8:00 a.m. today (3rd), severely disrupting services at government hospitals.
GMOA Secretary Dr Prabath Sugathadasa stated the strike followed the arbitrary intervention by health officials in the transfer process for 6,000 doctors and the political appointment of post-intern medical graduates, bypassing established procedures.
While outpatient departments and clinics at major facilities, including the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in Colombo, Kandy, and Galle, were crippled, Sugathadasa affirmed that doctors continued to provide emergency and essential services.
Thousands of patients faced significant hardships as the strike coincided with recent public holidays, leaving many unable to access scheduled treatments or clinical care.
The GMOA warned of further intensified industrial action if the government fails to provide a formal resolution to their grievances.
