International Monetary Fund (IMF) Senior Mission Chief for Sri Lanka Peter Breuer, speaking at a virtual media briefing, highlighted that there is a stark contrast between the country’s economic collapse in 2022 and its revival since implementing painful but necessary reforms. The IMF yesterday (4th) acknowledged the significant progress made by Sri Lanka in recovering the economy, whilst insisting that maintaining momentum is critical to securing long-term stability. The assessment came as the IMF’s Executive Board completed the third review under the 48-month Extended Fund Facility (EFF). Breuer raised concerns over the electricity issue in the country and added that the amended electricity charges do not cover the expenses of power supply. He also stated that strikes are a hindrance to the economic growth of the country.
