“Prepare Somaratne for international investigation” – MP Shritharan urges

Virakesari, Thamilan, Thinakkural

In a parliamentary debate on Tuesday (5th), ITAK MP S. Shritharan urged the government to facilitate an international investigation into the Chemmani mass graves. He revealed that Somaratne Rajapaksa, a death row inmate and the main convict in the Krishanthi Kumaraswamy case, is prepared to testify before an international tribunal. Shritharan tabled a letter from Rajapaksa’s wife to the president stating her husband’s readiness to provide evidence. While supporting the motion against the IGP, the MP argued that justice must also be served for the atrocities against Tamils, citing the discovery of 155 skeletal remains in Chemmani, and demanded the government clarify its stance on Rajapaksa’s offer, while calling on it to prepare Rajapaksa for the international probe.

“Ministry of Justice is blatantly interfering; is it an attempt to stop the
excavation of the mass grave?” –
Gajendrakumar

Thinakkural, Virakesari

Speaking in parliament on Tuesday (5th), Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) Leader and MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam accused the Ministry of Justice of severe political interference in the Chemmani mass grave excavation. He alleged that the secretary of the Ministry of Justice was in direct contact with the forensic team,
which he termed a form of political pressure. Ponnambalam also claimed that CID officers were deployed at the venue where recovered items were
displayed, calling it a deliberate act to intimidate the public. He further criticised the Human Rights
Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) for not recommending an international investigation under the Rome Statute, adding that these actions demonstrate that justice for Tamils cannot be achieved through state structures.

“We will not put hurdles, but ensure justice for Chemmani” – Bimal
Rathnayake

Thinakkural

Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation and Leader of the House Bimal Rathnayake stated that the government is conducting the Chemmani mass grave excavation under court supervision and assured that justice will be established. He accused certain political groups of forming an administration in the Jaffna Municipal Council by collaborating with individuals connected to the crimes being investigated, and that they should be held accountable for the skeletons being discovered in the region.
