“Provide the North and East to India and the South to China” – Adaikkalanathan

Thinakaran, Virakesari, Thamilan

Addressing parliament yesterday (8th), Democratic Tamil National Alliance MP Amirthanathan (Selvam) Adaikkalanathan told the government provide the regions of the North and East to India and Southern Sri Lanka to China, adding that nothing can be achieved by hating India. He emphasised that India supported Sri Lanka during the economic crisis. He further added that the ferry services between Rameshwaram and Thalaimannar should recommence and through that the tourism sector could be developed in Mannar.

Four more skeletons found at Chemmani mass grave

56 human skeletons have been identified at the Chemmani mass grave site as of yesterday (8th).
Attorney-at-Law Ranitha Gnanarajah claimed that the four skeletons were identified at the location near the site where all the other skeletons had been identified.

Kirupakaran, a member of the administration of the Chemmani Crematorium and the complainant in the case of the mass grave, told the media that a suspicious vehicle which had been seen at the mass grave site had come near his residence in an attempt to intimidate him. He added that it is an attempt to silence the witnesses so that the case is brought to a situation where it cannot proceed.
Thinakkural: Attorney-at-Law K. Sugash alleged that the complainants have been threatened by high-ranking officials of the relevant offices where the complaints have been lodged.

Three-member committee appointed to probe into activities of the Central Cultural Fund from 2017 to 2020

The Cabinet has granted approval for the appointment of a three-member committee, chaired by retired High Court Judge G.M.W. Pradeep Jayathilaka, to investigate the activities of the Central Cultural Fund. The probe follows reports of alleged financial irregularities within the Fund, particularly concerning financial assistance provided for religious sites and other activities during the period from 2017 to 2020. The decision to establish a committee to investigate these claims was first made by the Central Cultural Fund’s own Board of Governors during its 223rd meeting on May 17, 2025.

“Expedite process of digitalisation” – President tells the IRD

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has instructed officials of the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) to digitalise the IRD as a crucial step towards achieving Sri Lanka’s digital economy targets by 2030. President Dissanayake issued the directive during a discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (8th) with representatives from the IRD, the Ministry of Digital Economy and the Ministry of Finance. Special attention was given to the future of the department’s existing Revenue Administration  Management Information System (RAMIS). The discussion focused on several key areas including the strategy for maintaining the system, the process for localising its management and ownership, identifying current shortcomings and implementing effective technical solutions to address them.

Conditional bail for four including the former RMV commissioner general: overseas travel ban imposed

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to four individuals, including former Commissioner General of Motor Traffic Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasinghe, in connection with an alleged illegal vehicle registration case. The suspects were arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on suspicion of authorising the issuance of a number plate for a vehicle that had been registered with the Department of Motor Traffic without clearance from Sri Lanka Customs. Following submissions from the Bribery Commission and state counsel, Colombo chief magistrate ordered the release of all four on conditional bail. As per the court’s directive, three of the suspects were granted two surety bails of Rs. 1 million each, while the fourth suspect was released on a surety bail of Rs. 500,000. In addition, the magistrate imposed an overseas travel ban on all four suspects and ordered them to surrender their passports to the court.

 

Approval to fill 5,000 out of the current 28,000 police vacancies

Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala announced in parliament yesterday (8th) that the Sri Lanka Police service is currently grappling with a staggering 28,000 vacancies, and that 5,000 new officers will be urgently recruited to manage this severe shortage. The minister revealed that formal approval has now been granted to recruit 5,000 individuals for the positions of sub-inspector of police and police constable. He further stated that the corresponding gazette notifications for these recruitments have already been published.

Parliament was informed yesterday (8th) that the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) has ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to launch a fresh investigation into the 2011 disappearance of political activists Lalith Weeraraj and Kugan Muruganandan. Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala stated that the acting IGP issued the instructions and orders to the CID on June 3. Wijepala made this disclosure in parliament in response to queries regarding the case of the two activists, who went missing in Jaffna in 2011. Wijepala added that there have been no government interventions regarding the delays caused to investigations on missing persons following the war in the North and East.

Deputy Minister of Economic Development Anil Jayantha Fernando announced that the much-anticipated report on the controversial release of shipping containers will be presented to parliament in the coming days. The report, compiled by a five-member committee appointed by the Ministry of Finance, has already been submitted to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched a formal investigation into the incident. Deputy Minister Fernando emphasised that there has been no political interference in the inquiry. He reiterated the government’s commitment to full transparency, affirming that no effort will be made to shield individuals or suppress findings.
